Horrendous-violent cough
I'm yet again worried. :(. I have spent the last 3 days in bed and have had the worst cough I have ever had in my life. In the middle of the night it is violent- every inch of me convulsed and I've thrown up from the hacking. I'm about9 weeks. I have only taken Tylenol- is the baby safe in there? Can it survive such convulsions even though it's so little? I have not had major pregnancy symptoms all along so it's all so nerve racking. Anybody else get really sick (not morning sickness) early on and all was ok? I have another sono in a little over a week- nothing I can do about having gotten sick but please give me some hope that all will be ok.

Horrendous-violent cough
I had a pretty awful cough that lasted well over a month. I coughed to the point of throwing up and peeing myself. I was about 14-19 weeks. Baby was and still is completely fine (I'm just about 34w now). I took whichever the robitussin is that you can take (D I think) but it didn't really help. The thing that finally cured it was me coming down with a pretty awful and violent stomach virus. Go figure!

Re: Horrendous-violent cough
I have terrible allergies so I've had some pretty bad coughing and sneezing fits this pregnancy, twice it resulted in me throwing up. I mentioned it to my doctor because I was nervous about the baby but he assured me that they are very cushioned in there and totally unaffected.

thanks for the encouragement. I'm trying to have faith that all is ok.....but this cold is I think the worst I've had, and it's frightening when you have to worry about the pregnancy too. I went to work today (I work in the city) and am completely miserable. That commute kicked my butt! I think I'm going to go home early and find an urgent care (no dr. I've called is able to see me), just for some peace of mind or something.....

Horrendous-violent cough
I had a cough like that my entire pregnancy. Ds is fine! Dr said all was good and mine was from increased mucous during pregnancy and literally went away right after birth.

Horrendous-violent cough
Not to alarm you but I had such a horrendous cough from Week 14 until DD was born that I was diagnosed with bronchitis three times. I was very concerned about DD and how it would effect her, or it sending me into early labor. Not only was she ok, she was entirely the cause. It is a more uncommon pregnancy side effect, but it is often caused from the baby pressing on your diaphragm, combined with increased mucous and sometimes GERD. In my case it got worse at the end because DD's foot was caught under my lung (they had to unhook it at the c-section). But she survived, made it to my c-section date, and I stopped coughing immediately after birth. Hopefully its just a cold and it will go away sooner, but I am fairly certain the baby is safe in its amniotic fluid and the cough is only bothering you.

I should also say that they kept telling me it wasn't pregnancy related (my OB, my GP, etc) until it just didn't go away. Then they started saying well it can happen. I think my OB was concerned and started doing research on it. But I also found people complaining about it on Google, so I knew it was a possible side effect. Clearly it was. Since it stopped after DD was born.

Re: Horrendous-violent cough
I just got over a horrendous sinus infection. It was so bad that DH slept on the couch bc I keep waking in the middle of the night violently coughing/gagging as well. I tried Robitussin DM, but it did nothing so finally I sucked it up and got a z pack. I finished it on Sunday and still have a slight cough, but nothing nearly as bad as last week. I'll be 10 weeks tomorrow.

Re: Horrendous-violent cough
I've had a bad cough since yesterday but it is getting better. I'm just letting it out naturally. I am 24 weeks, 4 days and I feel like I went the entire pregnancy without medicine; I may as well continue. I normally wouldn't take anything anyway for a cough except for cough drops. I wouldn't worry about baby - just get yourself better!

Re: Horrendous-violent cough
You can't cough the baby out of you! I was sick for 9 weeks of my last pregnancy with terrible sinus infections and bad coughs. And is 9 weeks old today. Don't worry!

Horrendous-violent cough
Thanks all! Makes me feel a bit better - just know the baby is going for a ride though! The middle of the night has been absolutely awful for the last few days (continuing to hack horribly and throw up as a result etc.)....I was going to go to the regular dr. but I really dont want to take antibiotics so I know that other than that, they wouldnt be able to do anything for me. I ultimately decided not to go....however, I bit the bullet yesterday and started on some robitussin....hope that helps!
