Do you shut down your AC when you go away or leave it running?

Re: Leaving AC on while away

If it's central air you should probably leave it running- I think you aren't supposed to turn central air on and off- just adjust the temp setting so it's not wasting energy cooling the house to a temp you'd keep it if you were home.

Raise the temp a bit.

Leaving AC on while away

We have new AC's, and it's actually more energy efficient to leave them on all day (at like 75) then to turn them off, let the house get to 100* and then try to cool it off when we get home, which never happens anyway. So we leave it on, at about 75 all day.

Re: Leaving AC on while away

I have a dog and it is CAC --

So, I do leave it in the "on" setting but I turn it up when I'm not home to around 75 degrees. So my pup is comfortable and it's not really pumping at a great rate.

We just have wall ac's and will sometimes just leave them on fan so they're not fully running but it's not stifling when we get back. Or house teems to cool off pretty quickly anyway.

Re: Leaving AC on while away

We have Dogs and Cats.. so we leave the temp at a steady 74 degrees when we're not home. I do make sure I close the blinds/curtains on windows that get full afternoon sun to help not heat up the house much.

I'm all for leaving it at 74 when I'm home too.. when DH gets home.. i freeze and he puts it to 69 Chat Icon

Re: Leaving AC on while away

2 wall AC's and turn them off when we leave the house or go to bed (the one in the living room).

My house is very well insulated so when we come back home, it is always still cool even many hours later.

My bill just went down $35/month so we must be doing something right Chat Icon

Re: Leaving AC on while away

No. Don't shut it down but raise it a bit more so the house never gets too hot. We also have it hooked up up to our phones so the day we are coming home from vacation we will turn it back on from our iphones. Do it with the heat as well so don't waste the AC or heat, but then comfortable when we get back home.

Leaving AC on while away

Before we had a nest thermostat, we would turn it off or keep the temp high. Now we can just turn it on and off from our phones.

We have two window units in the bedrooms. We turn them off during the day. I turn them on 1-2 hours before bed.

We have window units. I leave them on for the dog. I worry more about my dog being hot than DH and I lol. My worst fear is the power going out while I'm not home.

ETA it's usually so cold by the time I get home, that I raise the temp. So it works out goodChat Icon

We have central air. We put the temp to 78 and put it on hold. So it's not "on" all the time, but will only kick in if it gets higher than 78.

Re: Leaving AC on while away

I shut it down if we leave for a weekend or longer.... It doesn't get super hot in my house though. Lots of shade.

Mine always goes back to the original setting no matter what I do. Not sure if I am doing something wrong so even if I adjust the setting, I am sure it will turn on at the original setting so it will be running quite a bit.

We normally leave it at 75 when the dog is home and we are not. If the dog with us I will put it up to 78.

We have wall ACs and leave them off when we aren't home. I used to leave them on but ever since our AC went on fire (when we were home) Im scared to leave it on.
