Home improvement job costing more than estimate on contract

If you have some kind of home improvement job done and something arises during the job that costs more time for the contractor, does the contractor charge you more for that or stick to the estimate they had given in the first place?

Re: Home improvement job costing more than estimate on contract

My husband is a contractor and I know when he finds additional damage once he begins a job, he gives the option of fixing the damage for an additional cost. If he is just having a tough time getting something to come together, he eats the cost of the additional time it takes.

This is a situation where something took longer to come together and do.

I've usually had the contractor tell me of the new situation that arises, and give me option.

honestly, i have come to expect that any job you do on a home that involves construction or some degree of unknown can go over the estimate. There are just some things that you won't know until you open up a wall or expose plumbing/electricity etc
As long as your contractor is up front BEFORE they do the work, i'd expect to pay the extra amount.
If you have to pay extra due to their negligence or incompetence then that's another story

As above, and if added costs arise there should be a change of work order prior to the work being done outlining how much extra it will cost. This has happened to us a few times during our kitchen demo and reno.

It was something seen before that was to be done, but when doing it, it moved something over and that took extra time. It was a fluke thing that something about it took extra time. So it really technically wasn't something surprisingly that came up, but it lead to moving something else and just the way it was positioned took longer. I guess it is the part that it just so happened to take longer we were asked to pay a little bit more when we finalized bill that I questioned.

Why don't you actually give details on what you're talking about?

Was it something that couldn't be foreseen because it was behind a wall or something? If it was something that caused a significant amount of extra time, I could see the extra charge, thought I would think that the contractor should have spoken to you before billing you.

Read your contract. It usually says it's an estimate and actual costs can be more. Sometimes it says +/- a certain percentage.

Often, if the work costs more than the estimate, you see the difference in your final bill. This is very typical. Only one contractor we used didn't charge us more afterwards, despite having changes a long the way, but that is not usual.

How much additional time? Were you paying a daily labor rate?

He said this one part took two extra hours and charged us, not a lot more but I was surprised considering we were so generous with drinks and lunch, etc. We ended up paying it but I get the feeling it is not the norm. There was no hourly rate but a contract. It was someone DH knew from somewhere so we didn't want to make a big deal.

If your contract wasn't based on an hourly rate, he probably should have discussed the extra cost with you ahead of time. But for two hours of labor, if I was happy with the final product, I wouldn't make an issue over this at all.

If someone is doing more work than expected, shouldn't they get paid more?
