Solar

anyone have solar panels on their home? I have noticed many homes lately with solar. If you have them are you happy with it? Are you saving a lot on your bill? Any negatives about solar?

Re: Solar

Just got mine installed last week in june so I havent been able to see a savings yet. I love sunation. We financed the panels. No money out of pocket. We got 26 sunpower panels and I will be paying $122 a month for solar and just the hook up fee for pseg which is $12. Very happy about that

We used Sunation and our salesman was Stephen foley. If you call them and use them please tell them Scott Budoff sent you.

Everything about SUnation and everyone that works there has been amazing. I do not have any complains

Re: Solar

Do a search in here for Sunation, and you will see dozens of threads, all with nothing but positive things said about them. I have lots of posts about my solar panels, all the way back to 2009, when I had them installed.

Love our panels! We used Energy By Choice...great company. We bought the panels rather than lease. We couldn't be happier and we're "banking" thousands of KWs so far (since the end of March).

Can anyone comment about radiation??? I read an article that they emit radiation and my son will be right under one panel on the back of my house. It seems silly but as a parent I worry.

Re: Solar

If you have a lot of peaks in your roof does that limit how many panels you can install? Do they make panels not square shaped but triangle shaped? I would think I would need a lot of those due to the shape of my roof. One nice thkng my house is very tall and my roof isn't slanted/pitched much so i would be hard pressed to even see them from the ground.

The panels don't emit anything, and in fact, since they absorb light, they would technically reduce radiation from the sun....
Plus, they reduce so much air pollution by needing less coal or oil burned by power plants.

http://www.off-grid.net/forums/topic/emf-pollution-from-neighbours-solar-panel-system-2/
The forum thread has some good info in it about EMF radiation, and how being tied to the grid and using regular electricity is worse for you than the solar panels or the inverter.

As long as you don't sleep directly on top of the inverter, there isn't anything to worry about, as far as EMF radiation is concerned.

Sharp (a major solar panel manufacturer) does have triangular panels:

There are probably others as well.

Our electric bill has never been more than $13. We never pay for electricity itself, but rather just the use of the service. Once a year we get a refund actually.

So your regular monthly pseg bill is only 12 and thats for the connection. They arent supplying any electric to your house?

Overall, you're paying 134 a month for electric?

My current balanced budget pseg bill is 281. So that would go away with solar snd id onlybe paying the financing through sunnation and the connection fee through pseg?

We are still connected to pseg but since i have enough panels to supply my house i will only have to pay connection fees.

We have had our panels installed for about 2 years now. We leased (fixed rate for 20-year term) and EmPower installed our panels. We pay a small fee to lease and the power generated by our panels covers all our electric needs and more. We pay the small connection fee to PSEG each month ($9-12). I love our panels!

So are you saying the 122 a month is your finance payment for the panels from Sunation? How long is your finance term, interest, etc.?

Did you have to put anything down?

we are looking to get solar panels - this seems a little too good to be true. My PSEG bill is around 200 with balanced billing.

Re: Solar

So under that deal, the panels are costing $21,960 over 15 years.

We bought ours a few years ago through another company. We knew we'd be in this house for at least 16 more years. We did the math for leasing vs. buying and it didn't make sense for us to lease.

Total cost for system was approx $30K+
We put $500 down at contract signing.
They accepted the LIPA rebate as the rest of the downpayment.

We paid the rest. NY and Federal rebates come back after you file that year's tax return.

When all was said and done and we received the rebates, our cost was about $9K.
At the rate we are going, we will have recouped our initial investment in about 2 years. After that, we should only be paying the monthly connection fee. "Free" power for the next 13 plus years.
