anyone familiar with pumpkin plants?
im growing one in my front yard!
it just showed up this year (just in time for my little pumpkin to be born in early october!)
it's pretty big already... and besides being afraid that it wont last until october, im also curious of more will grow from the vines.
anyone know how to care for it? it's done this all on its own so far, so im tempted to just leave it alone, but im sure the dead leaves should be trimmed, etc.. and i dont know wher to snip them.
it's bigger than it appears on the pic Image Attachment(s):

Re: anyone familiar with pumpkin plants?
We always put a piece of slate between pumpkins and the dirt to keep it from rotting or bugs - never seen this at a pumpkin patch though - so just some non professional advice.

Re: anyone familiar with pumpkin plants?
Garden cneters sell a little wire rack thing to put under it so it doesn't rot. Other than that good luck. All of the times I have planted pumpkins I have never even got one. Good job!

Not all pumpkin plants will have a pumpkin. It will depend on if the seed was male or female. I had on cause squirrels are my pumpkins and deposited the seed in another location. Never got a pumpkin.

I grew them one year and got three large ones. I didn't do a thing for them.

I used to put straw underneath! I have never been successful at growing them big, though. They got about the size of a cantaloupe before detaching from the vine :-/

Re: anyone familiar with pumpkin plants?
I grow them each year and here's some tips:
Put something under it. A plate will work if you have one big enough. You need to carefully turn them so they don't develop a flat side. When it turns orange, you can cut it. Leave it out in the sun to cure for a week or 2 and then bring it in and keep it somewhere cool and dark.
We save a lot of $$ growing our own each instead because they get expensive when you go pumpkin picking!
