10 year old and shaving...
So my baby girl is growing up! Over the weekend I noticed that she is growing hair under her arms. What age is appropriate to start shaving? Or is there something else that we can do? Or just leave it alone for now?
I, of course do not remember when I started or even when my 18 year old did.
I guess it's time to start having "The Talk"!

I did not start shaving anything until later teens but I was not hairy. The sooner she starts the thicker it will grow in, IMO wait as long as possible

I would say when it starts bothering her that she wants to. I would say around 11/12 the girls start shaving.

I def think it's time for the talk. This is usually a good sign that her period is coming soon. If it bothers her I would teach her to shave, if not then I would wait until it does. Shaving now will not make it thicker.

Re: 10 year old and shaving...
DD had hair sometime in 5th grade. Started shaving in 6th grade because she had gymnastics in the winter. Otherwise would have waited till summer when she turned 12. I shaved her legs and underarms a few times and now she does it. Although she has had hair for about 2 years and acne NO period yet.

Re: 10 year old and shaving...
my DD started this year, at 11. She also got her period at 11... they grow up so fast. I showed her how the fist time, then she did it on her own. She swims year round so she shaves all the time, she's a little pro at it now. American Girl Doll has 2 great books for this type of stuff. When DD got her period I was so nervous about showing her how to use a tampon (swimming). She was like, "it's in the book, I got this" and she did it, God bless her, she handled it all so well, no drama at all. But she says the books help a lot. When we first got them we read them together, I answered any questions she had and I really helped break the ice and made us comfortable talking about things.

My DD is 10 and going into 6th grade and we recently dealt with this and had the talk as well. The American Girl doll books were also great to open conversation. I let her shave her underarms once the hair began to grow since she goes to gymnastics weekly. She shaved her legs once for a wedding but I don't think she needs to do this weekly yet. I showed her how once or twice and she is a pro now....

Re: 10 year old and shaving...
ugh, I am not looking forward to all of this. My DD is 9 - and she has dark, course hair. Leg hair. nothing under arms yet. She hasnt mentioned it or seemed bothered by it, so of course I am not bringing it up. I know she will start much younger than I did though. I was in jr high - around 13 when I did, but my hair is blonde and fine. I assume by 11 or 12 I will allow her to shave.
On a side note, I keep reading that these american girl doll books are awesome for this stuff so I think I am going to order them on Amazon now to have them on hand lol....
