Telling siblings

Just curious for those of you pregnant with #2 or #3 or more, when did you tell your other children? My DD will be 4 in October (and my son is 2) and just worried that she is gonna have a gazillion questions between now and the time baby arrives- 6mths (would def wait till at least 12 weeks) is a long ass time in the mind of a preschooler!

Telling siblings

The day we found out. But she was 9 months old so she had no idea what we were saying lol. And even now at 17 months old, she really doesn't get it either.

I know, I'm no help lol.

We waited a while to tell dd's and wish we waited longer - I say wait as long as possible. It is a very long time for them.

Re: Telling siblings

I had to tell them around 6 weeks because I was getting so sick. I have a 6,5, and 1 year olds. I'm only 14 weeks now, and my 6 year old is excited, but understands when feb is, my 5 year old is excited and wants the baby now lol, and my 1 year old is just starting to understand.

I'd wait as long as you can, because it is a long time to wait for kids, i do think I should have waited till the gender reveal, but I'm pretty big at 14 weeks with #4, so I don't think I could have waited that long.

Re: Telling siblings

I told my 4 and 5 year olds (at that time) when I was about 12 weeks. I would have waited except I had to tell work and I was afraid that someone would say something to them (I teach at their school).

Re: Telling siblings

We waited til I was at 12 weeks and started sharing the news with others (other than our parents, who we had told right away). I figured people would go up to her right away and make a comment about her being a big sister, and boy was I right! I'm sooooo glad we told her first and prepped her. She's 2.5 years.

Telling siblings

We told Hailey when I was like 8w I think... She didn't pay it much attention till about 10w when she had to come with me to a sono. She knows there's a baby sister in my belly and she knows her name. But she's 2.5 so no she has no clue what any of it means. Lol

8.5 weeks bc we were telling my family and knew they'd want to congratulate her too. She's 2.5 and understood the idea of a baby in my belly, but thinks baby brother is coming for her bday which is in December. I'm due in February. I might have a very disappointed bday girl later this year.

Re: Telling siblings

We told DS right away but he was only about 20 months so he didn't fully understand and we knew he wouldn't tell others. If he was older, I would've waited until we went public after the first trimester.

Re: Telling siblings

DD is 4 yrs old and that was a perfect age for her to be excited about it. I waited until after the first trimester, as I've had early losses in the past and certainly did not want to have to explain any misfortune down the road Chat Icon I told her by giving her a little gift with it (it was a pretty jewelry music box and inside was a small baby, the size of what the baby was in my belly at 12wks gestation). It helped to have that visual and to explain what was going on, etc. She hasn't asked too many questions, was just excited to feel baby move, she was a big part of the gender reveal this past month, and has helped shop with us for stuff and think of names, etc. She's been very involved which has made it even more fun. She's excited to be a big sister and I know that will help a lot when baby DOES get here and she's not an only child anymore.
