potty training when your dc is non verbal?

I just wanted to see if anyone had experience with potty training if your DC was non verbal? What techniques did you use? My DS just turned 3 recently and I was wondering when I should start trying. I brought it up to his teacher (center based EI program) a few months ago and she said to wait until he can communicate more. However he has been receiving services since he was 18 months old and he is still not verbal so i'm not exactly sure when I should start trying. TIA.

My brother was non verbal when he was of potty training age, and having his speech teacher work with him on "yes" and "no" not only alleviated tantrums, but also helped with potty training. Using PECS, Proloquo, or a picture of the potty may help as well. Show him those things and then sit him on the potty.
