if it her first time, I recommend group lesson, and you DC should be at least 6 years old and up. Most places wont take younger,

awesome thank you so much!!!! ds is 4yo but maybe he can start getting acquainted with pony rides? he really really loves riding though the few times he's been on a horse/pony and seems to prefer that over soccer. Chat Icon

Thomas School of Horsemanship. Round Swamp Rd in Melville. Right off the northern state. Good starter barn. My 2 DD's rode there. Groups are small and the younger kids have walkers alongside them as they ride.

I have been riding since the age of 7, 4 is far too young for lessons. I dont know a single trainer that would take him on.

If you want a pony ride Indian head is your best bet, he is great and they have a lot of kids.

Its great to hear he loves horses though!!!

FM me is you have questions

My older DD started at 9. She actually started at Indian Head (great place). My younger one started around 4 but i stopped it for a while she really wasn't picking it up. she takes lessons every now and then with the trainer where our horses are. She also didi a great camp at Parkview in Islip this summer. She isn't as serious about tas my other DD butI want her to be able to get around horses.

Thomas does group lessons. they do a fall series and a spring series about 10 weeks and with the younger riders they have an assistant that stay right next them while on the horse. They also do a 3 lesson intro series if you wanted to try to see if its something he might be ready for.

Re: looking for horseback riding lessons for dc

If you are willing to come east, Fox Tail Farms in Smithtown is great. My daughter rides there and the instructor is safe and teaches kids that age. The lessons are private.

I've bern riding since I was 9 ( yikes that's 30 years) and have ridden at Knoll Farm, Country Farms, Stanhope, Thomas'.
I'm now at Winding Hill. I love the horses there and love my trainer (been with her for 14 years). I am also happy with where my daughter rides as it is age appropriate for her needs and her instructor is great with young kids.

thanks everyone for your help! i called Fox Tail but Stephanie (the trainer) said that the farm is someone's backyard because we wanted to take a look before signing up for lessons. Lessons with her are $40 for 20 minutes.

I spoke with Thomas School and they are open tomorrow so trying to decide between Thomas and New York Equestrian Center. I believe Thomas teachers Western riding style and NYEC teaches English? Anyone have experience with these two? Thanks so much!!

Great

We have tried a few places over the years. While all lessons are pretty equal. I always felt the overall experience with riding, horse care and social aspect at Thomas's was better.

Never did the one in West Hempstead but looking at their website I like the one day camps they offer on vacations and summer.
My DD did a lot of the one day camps this summer at Parkview but its not that close.

Beware what started as a $30 lesson 12 years ago lead to owning 2 horses today, lol.
