Does anyone rent DVC points?

I have been doing a lot of reading to plan for our trip next summer and this seems to be the thing, to get a good price on a deluxe resort.

I don't actually know anyone who does this IRL though and you ladies are the next best thing for good advice.

Also, if I cancel my current trip with Disney to do this, will I get my deposit back and travel insurance refunded? Or can it be applied to new accommodation? (Read on one site they can link everything up through the MDE site).

It can save money. I can tell you how it is an owner, but I've never rented out someone else's points. Google davids vacation rentals to see if this is something you'd be interested in doing.

Just a few words of caution. It is a private transaction between you and the owner. Disney will not get involved in any way if there is a problem. Also, most rental contracts are pay in full when the reservation is made. Because of the nature of how DVC points work, most (if not all) rental agreements are final. Meaning, you can't change the dates, cancel, request a different room type, resort, etc.

Aside from the way the reservation is made (including the meal plan), in all other respects, it is a normal Disney reservation. You can link everything through My Disney Experience, make FP reservations, etc.

I'm skeptical without knowing someone who has done it...would rather pay the $$ to avoid issues, KWIM?

It absolutely requires a level of trust. That's why I would suggest going through a broker. You have some safeguards that way. I've never rented someone else's points but have rented my own out. I have used David's to rent mine twice and it was all very professional and I would do it again if I needed to

I did last trip thru someone privately who was listing points for rent on the disboards. I checked her references and she sold me points at $12/pt. no issues at all and we stayed at a 2 bedroom villa at BLT for cheaper than a standard room thru disney. Its definitely a money saver and the best way to stay deluxe. The only negative id say is that if disney is running a free dining promo you dont qualify.

I did the math and the free dining doesn't save us much.

I've heard of people getting rooms thru DVC rentals for around $800-$1000 for the week.

Our bill for paying cash for eating was around $500 this trip. Granted, I cancelled all our character meals after doing one to save $$ and since we did BOG Id probably not book that again.

We paid for a moderate room and I think with everything it was still around $3k for the trip when it was all said and done.

That's a pretty big savings to rent vacation points and just pay for food OOP though.

We will see....as I said my biggest thing is the trust issue with this.

It can save a substantial amount. If you wanted a week a bay lake tower a standard studio room would be 123 points. At $12 a point, it would be $1476. You couldn't get a room at the contemporary for a week for that price.

The dvc dining plan prices for 2016 haven't been released yet but are usually slightly less than the meal plans for the general public.

It's secure. We are actually renting the owner of the company's points and staying in a deluxe 1 BR. It's been seamless, and was about 30-40% LESS.

Ill hold off on the final review until after i get back!

We did it and were very happy. We used David's Vacation rentals.

We did have a reservation with Disney at the time which we canceled for a full refund.

You get the most bang for your buck if you get a studio. A one bedroom or bigger is not as good of a deal.

To ameliorate some of the risk we booked a fully refundable room at a local Marriott which I canceled after we checked in. Travel insurance was through Travelguard.

I rented points at a one bedroom at BLT for a trip last November. I rented directly through a private owner I found on MouseOwners.com. I checked her references, took out travel insurance, and had a great experience. We stayed for 5 nights and this particular owner charged $13pp. It was 170 points so it was $2210 for the 5 nights. Add in theme park tickets and airfare and it was about $4200 for 3 of us for 5 nights in a 1 bedroom at BLT. I calculated that we saved about $800 over the cost of a regular room at the Contemporary. We would've saved more if we had chosen a studio.

Drawbacks of renting points are that you basically can't change your dates, you have to pay in full up front, and you have to book your trips 7-11 months in advance for the more desired resorts. I booked 9 months before my trip with a BLT owner.

The other thing people don't realize is that you don't get daily housekeeping with DVC. Depending on how long you stay, you will get "trash and towel" service after 4 nights. You can pay extra if you want more frequent service.

I haven't been a renter, but I've rented out my own unused points through the DVC Store. I highly recommend them.

I have rented privately and on DVC rental store.

Unless you booked within the past 14 days, your travel insurance will not be refundable.
