Brunch question- added menu- thoughts?

I'm having a small brunch for dd's first birthday. What do you put out before serving the main meal? Obviously typical apps don't really work so I'm stumped. Unless mimosas are sufficient!

Only having 12 adults, 2 kids and DH's family really aren't big eaters. Do you think this is enough? With a small selection to begin with serving muffins and mini quiches before the main meal seems silly.

Caprese quiche
Hashbrown crusted quiche with ham and cheddar
bacon
yogurt, granola, and berry parfait
corn muffins
sweet potato muffins
fresh fruit

cake and cookies
coffee, tea, mimosas, juice, pink lemonade

IMO, all you need are dinks, juices, bloody marys, mimosas, because all item prior will be the same as for the main meal. Once people arrive the meal should begin as people will be hungry

If you feel you need to maybe some hummus and pita chips. I think everything mentioned are items you put out during the main meal.

Fresh fruit
Spinach dip with cut up veggies
Quiche
Blintz soufflé
Salad

Re: Brunch question

I did a huge brunch for my DS's 1st birthday. I didn't serve anything beforehand, I just had the whole buffet ready to go as everyone arrived and we just started eating right away. It was actually really nice and because I had so many different types of things, people munched and ate for a while. It was great!Chat Icon Chat Icon

Brunch question

Still undecided. I don't want to have way too much food bc it's only 12 adults. Also, keeping everything gluten free for dh. Thinking I'll put out some mixed nuts, maybe mini muffins, and just try to serve the meal soon after everyone arrives.

agreed! Put those out along with your brunch drinks (mimosas, Bellinis, bloody marys, screw drivers, etc.) Don't put out TOO much if your making a big meal.

I actually think serving drinks like mimosas would be a fine "appetizer" by itself, but I don't see why you can't serve one of those items first. You can break this down into courses or at least some apps and a main meal. The quiches and bacon are def. a main meal but the yogurt parfaits can be an appetizer. Or choose one of those muffins and make them mini and serve them first, or put the fresh fruit out first and have that out the whole time. That way people can snack on the fruit, but it doesn't really fill them up!!

I would have the muffins and fruit out when your guests arrive then serve the other food as your main course. The cake and cookies can be served as dessert.

I would do more traditional muffins (blueberry, chocolate chip, apple, etc) over the corn muffins and sweet potato muffins. I also think they "fit in" better with the quiche.

Also, maybe just make one type of quiche and since it's a brunch, put out some rolls, bagels, cream cheese and cold cuts. Plus a nice potato or pasta salad to go with that.

Just a suggestion, I would drop the yogurt unless you know everyone likes it. I did yogurt for a brunch once and nobody really touched it, they liked all the other goodies better. I don't think yogurt is a big crowd favorite in general.

ETA - I'd serve everything at once and then put out the cookies and cake a little later on after the main brunch.

Re: Brunch question- added menu- thoughts?

Thanks! Maybe I will try to mix up the muffin recipes. Dh is gluten free (gets very ill from even a tiny amount) so I was trying to go with recipes I know will come out well gf. That's also why I'm skipping the bagels, rolls etc. It's just our siblings and parents so everyone knows the deal. Maybe banana chocolate chip muffins. Should I bother with two kinds or just stick to one?

Mil, sil, and dd will probably eat the yogurt over the other stuff. Not your typical crowd I know.

Cake and cookies will definitely be later for dessert. I think I'm going to forget the apps idea and just serve everything as soon as everyone arrives.

Thanks for all the replies. Bil is an amazing chef (professionally) so I get such anxiety cooking for him which does not work in my favor.
