deli sandwiches

Tomorrow at work, there is a team lunch meeting with the senior group leaders. On the menu will be deli sandwiches. There are few vegetarians, so they will also order grilled vegetable sandwiches (which will be served cold as well), so can I eat that? Chat Icon

I'm 9 weeks, and haven't come out yet, and will steer clear of the deli meats because I won't have access to a microwave in the conference room but do the same rules apply for the grilled veggie sandwiches?

It's a pretty important meeting, or else I would have stayed home.. what's a preggo to do? Or am I making too much ado about nothing?

Re: deli sandwiches

I ate deli meats the whole time I was pregnant. Not heated either.

You have more of a chance of getting listeria from hummus, fruit, veges, salad, blue bell ice cream and a host of other things that have been found recently to have listeria.... yet cold cuts get the bad rap. Yet I have never ONCE heard of a listeria outbreak in cold cuts.
Ever.

Re: deli sandwiches

If they want to ban deli meat due to listeria they need to ban cantaloupe, hummus, supermarket ice cream, lettuce, all bagged salads, Amy's Kitchen Organic frozen pizza, spinach

The list goes ON

And yet not one outbreak related to a ham sandwich.

Interesting the old information some docs go on.

They should probably update their handbooks

I don't, but I also don't really like deli meat. You could absolutely eat the grilled veg sandwiches though.

Re: deli sandwiches

From what I've read, the cold cut meat may be listeria-free upon packaging, but it can grow on it pretty easily after opening. It's not like the other food mentioned where "boars head ham made on this date contains listeria...". It's more that the small deli itself had some listeria growing on something and now anything that touched that cutting board or slicing machine will too. This won't make the big national pages of recall info, which is why you don't hear about listeria from coldcuts. At least that's my understanding. I've read that up to 85% of listeria is from meats.

It is scary that anything we eat can potentially be a host for listeria. But I tend to err on the side of caution for a lot of things. God forbid anything were to happen, I don't want the guilt of "was it that time I...?" So if I know that there's an increased risk in delis, I just avoid them for 9 mos.

So couldn't this be ANY eating establishment?? Why only a deli?

Re: deli sandwiches

I guess because coldcuts are most prone to it,especially on the slicing machines.

I have friends who won't even eat frozen yogurt or soft serve ice cream because of the machines there.

This and it can also be anything in any dining establishment, not just cold cuts.

I ate cold cuts throughout both pregnancies without worry. My dr never mentioned anything about not eating them, or anything really for that matter.

I didn't eat deli meat at all my first pregnancy, but this time I have eaten it a few times. But if you don't feel comfortable eating it, I think I the grilled veggie sandwiches should be fine.

Listen to your doctor....everyone will tell you that they either ate cold cuts everyday or didn't. If YOUR doctor says not to eat them then don't eat them. You're safe with the grilled veggie sandwich.

I've had a deli sandwich every once in a while. My dr said to focus more on turkey/chicken deli type of meat as opposed to bologna type deli meats. Do what you're comfortable with I don't think people at your job will think anything if you decide not to eat a sandwich.

After all this I settled for a corn muffin and some chips.. I couldn't stand the smell of tuna salad which I thought engulfed the entire room. Chat Icon thankfully, I was able to keep my stomach with me the whole time which was the biggest win. Chat Icon

I eat deli meat periodically. I limit to twice weekly though due to nitrates. I get nervous about hummus and fruits but still eat those too. You can get listeria from so many things. A vegetable sandwich should be fine also.
