How to start OT-update
Hello,
I believe both my children are in need of services. Their school has mentioned some things that I would like them to get tested for. One is fine motor skills and some minor sensory issues. The school states that I need to go outside the school because they do not have these services. I am just not sure where to start or who to call! Can someone please give me some insight on how I get them services? Thank you!
Thank you everyone! I called the district office and they gave me all the information I need to "get the ball rolling." I have some leg work ahead! I am just angry that the school psychologist and teacher said I have to go through my insurance, when the district website said that they could have recommended my older son for testing. Isn't it the teacher and supports staff job to know how to help these students and what district protocol is? When I taught high school I was never shy to speak with the resource room teacher on getting a student more help! Why would they leave me to flounder in my own? Grr!! Thank you for pointing me in the right direction!!

How old are your DC?

Call your school district. Any child over age 3 receives services through your school district, even if they are in private school. The school district will schedule an evaluation and then you will meet to discuss the results and decide on services if they qualify.

My DS started getting OT when he was almost 7, in first grade, I requested it through the school and they had him evaluated. He gets 2x30 now in the third grade.
Why doesn't the school offer these services?

They have to have them evaluated, the school district handles it. I don't think a developmental ped is even necessary for OT.
To get my son started for any of the services he gets, I wrote a letter requesting them.

The school district should handle the eval. You do not need a developmental ped for OT. If the eval determines they need OT and the school doesn't offer it, you will have a meeting to discuss options (i.e. You could take them somewhere and the district will reimburse, they may be able to get and OT to either come to the house or come to the school). No matter what, if they are found eligible, the district must provide it (at no cost to you) one way or another.
