East Islip Vs West Islip
Any pros and cons that u'd like to share? We've seen 2 houses for sale, one in EI and the other one in WI, but don't know anything about those areas.

Re: East Islip Vs West Islip
I live in West Islip. We love it here. Its a nice, quiet area. I have great neighbors. It's a mixed community of blue collar and white collar workers. My block has doctors, lawyers, cops, FBI agents, contractors, teachers and engineers. I like the proximity to all the highways, shopping, Babylon village and beaches. DS starts school next year so I don't have direct experience but they rate well. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me.

Re: East Islip Vs West Islip
I'd rather East Islip (including Islip Terrace) over West Islip. Better school, more diverse. More "realistic" means to live. Don't necessarily have to keep up with the Joneses. Don't get me wrong, it's nice, and close to all, but so is East Islip.
West Islip has no diversity. That's why it's also known as White Islip. That and probably all the coke.

I don't have direct experience with either west Islip or east Islip but I deal with schools all over Long Island (some with diversity some without, some what people consider the high end districts and what others consider low end districts) and they ALL have drugs in them!

Same! We've been in WI for almost 8 years and love it!
I will agree with the other poster that WI isn't the most diverse area. But I disagree that East Islip is a better school district. They are very comparable when you look at all the rankings.
Feel free to FM with any questions.

Re: East Islip Vs West Islip
Interesting, according to greatschools.org it seems that EI are a bit better than WI (EI rates 8 and WI rates 7). I do wonder though, why there's an elementary school in WI that's rating 5?!? Could that be accurate?

Re: East Islip Vs West Islip
I live in East Islip but we also looked in West Islip when we we searching for a house. I grew up in Babylon so I am very familiar with all the southshore towns. I honestly don't think you can go wrong with either town, even Islip and Bayshore are very nice. Just like any town, there are better areas than others, but essentially they are all very similar in my opinion. Of course you have people that are going to debate that one town is better than the other - but I have never found that to be the case. I have family and friends all over these neighboring towns and its all about the same demographic.
I think the location of the house is the most important thing. You can change a house, but you cant change where it is, how big your yard is, house busy the street is, etc.

Also Timberpoint Elementary is a Blue Ribbon school which is why the school ratings may be a little higher than WI.

Re: East Islip Vs West Islip
I grew up in West Islip and now own a house in West Islip. My kids are in elementary school and I have siblings at the middle school and high school levels.
I would agree that there is limited diversity but I'm fairly certain the same could be said about East Islip.
I think you would probably be happy in either location. I like that West Islip is convenient to parkways, Babylon village, beaches. There are plenty of local pizza places etc.

Re: East Islip Vs West Islip
I grew up in East Islip, and loved it there. Good schools, and very family oriented. Home values range from affordable to million dollar areas. Close to major highways (Sunrise & Southern State), and you have the benefit of having Hecksher Park, and the Bayard Cutting Arboretum only a few minutes away.
Both areas are very nice though, so you can't go wrong with either.

East Islip Vs West Islip
Both are great areas. EI is a bit more diverse than White Islip as posted above. Taxes we found are a bit lower in EI and you can get property. We didn't find big backyards in WI.
Both have coke issues in High School but every district has drugs issues. More money people have more drugs are in the system.
EI has more of a downtown then WI. WI is better for Commuting.
Both areas are known to have a snobbiness issue to the fact that families range from extremely rich to middle class.
Buy whichever house you love. You can't go wrong.

Re: East Islip Vs West Islip
Another vote for West Islip here. Great schools, community feel, nice neighborhoods.
True, there is no diversity but I doubt that East Islip is a melting pot.

Re: East Islip Vs West Islip
We live in W. Islip and I have to say I really like it here. We have met a lot of wonderful families. DH commutes to city so we needed to be close to Babylon or in Babylon. I love that Babylon and Bayshore are so close. The highways and beaches are easily accessible is also a plus. I like E. Islip because it has a main street feel. I wish we had that here.

East Islip Vs West Islip
I have lived in East Islip all my life, so that of course would always get my vote. West Islip is also nice but I have no direct experience with the schools.
I have had kids in 2 of the elementary schools, middle and high schools if you went direct info about them.
If you want more detailed info about the block - I bet I can offer insight - just pm me.
Good luck

Re: East Islip Vs West Islip
I live in East Islip (actually listing our house for sale in a few weeks and moving OOS). I prefer EI because it's a smaller town, more if a community feel. We have great neighbors, it's very family friendly and lots of kids coming to the neighborhood now. Many of my neighbors have been here since childhood, one neighbor has never lived off of our street! It's a wonderful town. Oh, and I love the location. Heckscher and Sunrise Hwy literally within minutes.

According to City Data, neither community is diverse--West Islip is 91.3% white, and East Islip is 90.2% white.

When we were looking to buy we looked in all the Islips. We ended up in Islip because it is a bit smaller than east and west and it has the cutest main street.

As an aside (I know nothing about the Suffolk towns as I live in Nassau), one of DH's friends has a nickname for West Islip - he calls it "White Islip".

We LOVE Islip. My extended family has lived here for generations. We walk to Main Street, the library, the local beach is close, there are a bunch of playgrounds nearby, and so far I have been impressed with how the school district has handled my son's needs. We rent right now but we hope to buy a home here eventually.

I just bought in Islip Terrace and we love the neighborhood and the closeness to everything we need. We're in EI schools but have no school aged children just yet to comment on them.
