DOE vs Long Island

What are the major differences teaching in the DOE vs Long Island public schools? If you had the choice, which would you choose. Being brand new in the DOE I'm just curious. Thanks!

I'm in the DOE and I feel safer here. If you get excessed, you still get paid through the DOE and you go into ATS until they find you a new job. With LI, if you're excessed then that's it.

Overall, I would choose the DOE over LI, but it all depends on what district on LI. If I got hired into a really good LI district whose budget passes every year, I would feel pretty safe there. You definitely get paid more on LI.

There's pros and cons to both, really

I think it depends on the specific school you work at. I've worked in 4 different schools. One of LI, one in rural upstate NY, and two in suburban upstate - each one had their own pros and cons. Honestly, the only positive about the LI school I worked at was the pay.

This. Also it depends on what you teach, some positions seem more secure for me doe is safer. Also in LI you pay benefits, no? In Nyc you don't so while you make more there's that

Re: DOE vs Long Island

I'm on li so I'm biased I guess but from stories I hear I would not work for doe. First of all it's so big and it sounds like there's no accountability. Moving principals around and closing and opening new schools? Of course this is generalizing, and I'm sure there ate some great schools and principals.

Also with the insurance thing, yes I pay into my health insurance but it works out to be about $300 a month pretax and we have the best insurance out there according to every dr office I go to.

And my salary is higher and commute is shorter. I know I am very lucky and happy.

ditto 110%

It's true city teachers don't have premiums for health insurance but LI higher salaries make up for it manifold.

Get out to LI as early in your career as possible because not all LI districts pay for your previous steps...

I work in the DOE. Its very stressful. I tried for a while to get a job in LI but its very hard to get in. I waited too long and now I'm too expensive. I also can't take the risk of getting excessed in LI if the budget doesn't pass.

Question What are LI health benefits like after retirement? In NYC we have great benefits after retirement and will have to pay very little into it. Thanks

Retirement benefits vary by district. Check each district's contract, but, in general, after working for a district for 10 years you receive retiree health benefits as if you were still working...

yes, this is true in the current contract in my district. retirees receive what the current contract states. so if teachers are responsible for 25% of the premium, the retiree will be responsible for 25% of the premium.

Good to know, thanks ladies. On average how much do LI teachers contribute to health benefits? In the city our health plan is free but our union dues are about $50 a paycheck which covers prescriptions, dental, and vision.

I pay 16% of premium for health insurance. My union dues are over $60 per paycheck
