Penn station question
There are elevators on each platform but I believe it's only one per platform. Thy are all in the middle of the platform. The same for heading back to Long Island. There are three main corridors for getting down to the track -- the one closets to the 2/3 line, the one closest to the A,C,E line and then the middle corridor. It's the middle one that gives you the elevators. Also for heading out to street level from Penn, there are elevators; however if you head towards the 2/3 train and make a left down the corridor, you will see a large staircase in the middle of escalators. If you stay to the left and head just behind the stairs, there is an elevator which you can use to bring you out to street level.
I hope this helps and I didn't confuse you with my "directions". :)

Re: Penn station question
There are elevators there. That's how I get around when I have my stroller with me. I can't tell you they aren't disgusting but they work.

Yes don't touch anything in them and hold your nose.
The ones to the platform are down by Kmart....that corridor right across from eh entrance.

Penn station question
Just make sure the station you leave from has an elevator because not all do. I go out of Wantagh and they do not have an elevator.
