Hyperlexia

We just had our CPSE evaluation for my son who is turning 3 in May. He is receiving services through EI but just started in November. They are using all his EI evals since they were just done. His psych eval was done in December and he was diagnosed with mild autism. He just started ABA a few weeks ago.

So the psychologist at the CPSE evaluation played with him and observed him of course. My son is hyper focused on letters and can read. She mentioned hyperlexia to us and said that it was very common in kids on the spectrum.

She said it was something to think about not now but when he gets older for kindergarten there are programs.

Does anyone have a child diagnosed with this or know anything about it?

My son has not officially been diagnosed but he fits all of the characteristics to a T. He knew his letters (upper and lower case) before he turned two, and if he doesn't know the word he tries to sound it out. He reads street signs, asks us to read larger words, wants to know what everything says, etc.

My biggest concern for him is comprehension.

His speech teacher was the first one to use the word "hyperlexic." If a picture was labeled she would have to cover the word because he would try to read it instead of recognizing the situation in the picture.

Re: Hyperlexia

So I've never heard of this before but I just read about it & I think my ds shows signs of this. He is 2 but he is very into letters & numbers & can spell many words, read basic words, do basic math & often if he hears something once he will remember it... I thought it's just a quirky thing... I didn't realize this was a sign of a problem! He was/is very speech delayed & is just starting to really catch up now. He has been getting EI services for his delays (gross motor & speech). He was evaluated through EI and we have been told he does not have autism, but he did have some extreme behaviors (ocd tendencies, defiance, extreme tantrums) which seem to be starting to really improve a lot just recently.

Does this condition pose a problem long term?? Is there something I should be doing? I will have to bring it up with his therapists.
