Can a regular doc diagnose asthma?
Thanks ! Years ago I had a bad cough and my doc at the time gave me Advair. I remember how much it helped. Battling a cough now and recalled the Advair. I did some googling and it looks like it's normally given for asthma. I wonder why I was given that for a cough.
Sometimes I think my breathing is screwy but I think I also don't breathe the right way normally. May mention this to my annual visit at the internist. Thanks again.

You can have just sickness induced asthma or even exercise induced asthma.
The advair opens up the lungs so it is helpful for coughing.
Feel better!

Good to know! I remember getting such relief from that little purple disk! I wish I had it right now.

Advair is just a steroid. It reduces inflammation. You need to be diagnosed with asthma by a pulmonologist. They will do breathing tests on you. Then give you a mebulizer treatment of albuterol which does open you up and then test again. If you increase your breathing by about 13% they'll consider you asthma.
However there could be several other reasons why your breathing is giving you trouble. Thing like allergies, dust, cigarettes and so on. I believe if a specialist exists for a certain ailment then you should go to the specialist. Good luck.

Years ago I had a dry cough that didn't bother me, but a pulmonologist that I worked with prescribed Advair and said that it would really help... I don't have asthma, but I guess doctors like it!

This. And yes, any PCP can diagnose Asthma. I had it as a child, but I get it seasonally now. In fact, the month of November I was on Advair.

I have very mild asthma- I generally only use Advair when I'm sick or if the weather is VERY cold per my doctor's instructions. I haven't needed it at all this winter. I do always carry a rescue inhaler, but I haven't used it in over a year.

This is me. I have a rescue inhaler but haven't used it for a rescue for years *knock on wood*.
The difference is if, I get a cold with a cough, I'm up to bronchitis stage in 2 days. Whereas my DH can just have that cough with a cold regularly. My cough goes to full out bronchitis, to which then I start using a steroid inhaler and the rescue inhaler (preemptively).
It's so hard when drs ask if you have asthma. The answer is always "kinda... only when I'm sick!"

Can a regular doc diagnose asthma?
Thanks all for the info!
Can I ask what symptoms you had the led you to think you had asthma? I get a bit winded walking stairs but it doesn't feel like simple "I'm out of shape" winded. I feel like I can breathe without restriction when resting though.
Sometimes I'm more aware of my breathing but I do feel anxious and tense at times. .. Like I'm sure most do!
How is it diagnosed?
