T-DAP Vaccine?

My OB gave me a prescription for the T-DAP vaccine and told me to just go to the CVS down the block and they'd administer it on the spot. So I went today and they just handed me a syringe. Chat Icon They said they only distribute the shot and do not administer it and I'd need to go to my doctor to have her inject it. Is this normal? I'm just walking around with a needle in my bag which is the weirdest thing ever to me. Also, what do I do with it? Do I have to go to my doctor right away to have it administered? I have an appointment Tuesday afternoon so I'd prefer to just wait until then but will it be okay til then? Do I put it in the fridge? Chat Icon What the damn hell? I was so flabbergasted at the pharmacy that I didn't think to ask these questions and they aren't picking up the pharmacy phone. If anything I'm going to go back after work and ask but I thought you guys might have some insight.

So funny that you mentioned this....this is exactly what happened to me yesterday! My CVS was not sure if they could administer it there (odd), but I could fill the prescription and take it to my OB (had the appt. this morning and he did it). Mine did say to refrigerate it, which I did. I would definitely call and ask how long you are allowed to hold onto it for.

Good luck!

Umm not normal. 1st time I got it in the hospital after I delivers as per cdc rec in 2013. Second time my ob gave it to my third trimester as per cdc rec in 2015.

T-DAP Vaccine?

That's weird. I'm getting it at my OB this Monday. They keep it in stock at doctor's office.

Weird! For both pregnancies, my OB had it in the office and gave it to me.

If CVS gave it to me as a syringe, I'd probably just self-inject it. Chat Icon But I took lots of shots for IF to get pregnant, so that doesn't scare me. Hmm...but then the dr probably wouldn't have it on record. I'd prob just call my OB or PCP and see if they could let me pop in quickly to get it done. It's just a nurse's visit so it would be quick.

Tetanus, Diphtheria, and whooping cough, but it is given to pregnant women specifically for the whooping cough since infants are more susceptible to it.

My OB didn't have the vaccine. I got it at my GP along with my flu shot. That's so weird that CVS just gave you the needle!!

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who was surprised by this!! I gave it back to them! Chat Icon I said please take this back I don't feel comfortable holding onto it. I have my doctor's appointment today at 3:45 so I'm going to pick it up on my way and ask her to administer it.

I can barely take it when a real doctor gives me a shot, there was NO way I was giving it to myself or giving my DH the satisfaction of administering it to me! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

ETA: I was afraid to get on the subway! Chat Icon Of course THAT would be the one time they search my bag and then think I'm a terrorist trying to stab people with hypodermic needles or something.

So I just went to pick up the prescription again and this time they didn't give me a syringe! They gave me just the vial. Chat Icon Whatever, I'm just hoping my OB doesn't give me a hard time administering it. I have had NO luck with vaccines this pregnancy! Nobody wants to stab me with needles!

Hopefully that's enough. I had my TDAP yesterday and definitely am running a low grade fever today and I can hardly lift my arm--just be ready for that! I had a tetanus shot last year and it hurt but NOTHING like this.

Ugh not looking forward to THAT! OB was so surprised they wouldn't administer it but she gave it to me on the spot no problem! At least it's done!

And other than my arm still being really sore, fever is gone and I feel much better today. It was a one day thing. My parents actually both got the vaccine a few months ago and they had the same fever side effect.

Good luck! The long term benefits definitely outweigh the short term!
