DH and I spoke about it last night and I had decided to go with the rental, but now I am reading about what you should do to your car if it will be unused for a long period of time and it is a lot of things that I don't think we can't do on our own, so how do we get that done and then get the car back home? And then it has me worried about problems that will arise with my car after leaving it sit for so long. Ugh! I'm going to call Acura today to see what info they can give about that
What happens if you let the car sit for too long? I spoke with DH about it this morning and we were going to go for the rental option. I don't need the new truck until September so I would rather keep this because its less expensive and better on gas. With taking the rental, I was thinking I would have to turn the car on to keep things running but can other problems occur? This is going to be a shit show for these dealerships.

Airbag recall
I read something that said if the car will sit for over 3 months you should loosen certain belts - for the alternator, power steering, a/c; lubricate the locks; and lift the car onto blocks to raise the wheels off the ground or take off the tires completely and store them flat. There was also discussion of the computer systems being affected by long term disconnection of the battery - which should be done, or get some kind of charger that can be left on the car and won't over charge the battery and also that any gasoline left sitting in the car can start to degrade. Fun stuff - not!
I called Acura and although the guy I spoke to was very nice, he was completely unhelpful about this stuff. DH has a friend who does a lot of work on cars (has his own shop), so I guess we will ask him about it and see what he has to say

ExDH's car sat for an entire year while he was deployed. When the car is going to be unused for a long period of time, just turn it on every week or so and let it run for a few minutes. Or take it for a quick drive around the corner and back. That's all that really needs to be done. Especially when it's not in winter months.

Which Acura store? I work for an Acura dealer and have an affected car as well. The problem is that Takata supplied airbags for every car line- no line is unaffected. I know that the supply of airbags is directed down south right now because one of the causes of the defect is humidity. They are working on getting new airbags from other suppliers but will be ordered by vin number. There have been ZERO deaths in Acura vehicles related to this recall. That being said, I did opt for a rental- ONLY because I'm pregnant. My husband is a technician in the shop here as well. Feel free to contact me with any questions you might have. I hope that I can help with any uncertainties....

Dh and I moved to NC. We left his car in NY with his parents. They started it mAybe 3 times in the year we lived there. Never drove it. Dh started it and drove it home. No issues and it was a shit old focus. Your car will be fine.

Today I called the Acura "corporate" office not a dealership. There is a lot of info online about the damage that can be done to a car if left to sit. Does it always happen - probably not, but I'm not too happy that it is a possibility

Yes, just call the dealership. If you call the number on the letter, they just tell you to call the dealer. The dealerships are ready for all of these calls and will give you the info you need

Yes, just contact whatever dealer you normally service with and they will set up the rental for you. You also have the option of bringing your car home or leaving it at the store. I am keeping mine at my house.

 At the very least the post was very insensitive. There are people who were killed and injured, so acting like anyone concerned about their defective airbag is just a crybaby was really out of line. I can't see how you can possibly be offended by a response to your offensive post???

Its wayyy more then 5million- more like 13 or 14 and affects 14 manufacturers. The ONLY manufacturer that hasnt announced this recall is Volvo and quite frankly, I think its only a matter of time...

Good for you. The rental supply is becoming quite low as well. There are no SUVs left on LI from what Ive heard.

Airbag recall
I've left my car unused while on vacation and never had a problem until this past February. Sat for a week and it rained pretty much daily while we were gone. We got rust spots on the rotor and now whenever I go more than 30 mph and use the brakes, there's an intermittent noise/vibration. Nothing to be concerned with, really really common, and it's already minimized from me driving it so much. Just wanted to mention, so if you do leave your car sitting for a while, you're aware.
We only have one vehicle and it's a CR-V so unless they can give us another large vehicle rental for free (prob not!) then we'll keep it.
Saying that this really won't be fixed until December-ish though has me worried.
