Talk to me bout blacktop vs pavers
We were originally going to redo our blacktop and border with pavers. For laughs, I asked for a quote with all pavers. I believe I've gotten a reasonable estimate for everything but I can't decide. The upfront cost for pavers is obviously more but from what I'm told it requires no maintenance. With the blacktop I'll have to seal cracks and redo. If I have to redo the blacktop twice, I've already spent more than the cost of all pavers. What does the maintenance look like for U if U have pavers/blacktop? How long have u had it and have u had to redo anything? Thanks!

I personally just love the look of pavers and it will help our resale value when we sell the house. We priced concrete vs pavers and it was essentially the same price. I love our pavers.

Thanks! Do U mind telling me how long you've had them and if I had to do any maintenance?

Re: Talk to me bout blacktop vs pavers
We only did ours last summer, so not even a year ago. They survived our winter with salt and a snowblower, no problem. I was nervous about our driveway because last winter an entire concrete block lifted and cracked, which is why we redid it. And when it was redone, they put the proper foundation so we had no issues this winter. I'm very happy.
My parents have had theirs for years, though. The only "maintenance" has been a brick that has popped up here or there, usually after winter. The company has always come back and fixed them at no cost, and my dad has even fixed a few himself, too.

Re: Talk to me bout blacktop vs pavers
My blacktop driveway was several years old when we bought it about 20 years ago. I haven't touched it, and I salt it in the winter, use it heavily, and it still looks good. The only damage I've gotten is when I had huge construction vehicles driving on it during a reno. I'm not trying to convince you to go with blacktop (I love pavers myself, and am thinking about going over my existing driveway with pavers at some point), just pointing out that if the driveway is done properly, you don't have to put a lot of maintenance into it.

Re: Talk to me bout blacktop vs pavers
we were told that we would never have to seal our black top if it is done correctly. We have had it for about 5 years and might not look as black, but its still looks great and is in great condition. I didn't want pavers casue i feel like 1) the car hides them anyway so you are paying so much for a car to sit and hide it and 2) they will look terrible with grease stains etc from the cars. I love the clean crisp look of the blacktop with a nice border!
I also think depending on the outside of the hosue, sometimes it can be overkill, but then othertimes it looks gorgeous!

We have black top now and when we redo it (it wasn't done right by original owners) we will do black top again
I have a neighbor w pavers. It's beautiful. BUT he has to re sand them In spring, if someone's car leaks oil-it ruins the blocks and they have to be replaced, he had to modify his snowblower w plastic covers on blades bc he found out the hard way that the pavers get scraped up pretty bad using the snowblower.
To me, I have way too many other things I have to be delicate with inside my house - I don't want my driveway (no matter how nice it looks when the cars aren't in it) to be another thing I need to be careful with.
I might, however, put a small design at the mouth of the driveway w pavers. SMALL

Pavers that have to be resanded are either old and not done with current methods or not done correctly. Pavers done correctly now will not need to be resanded.

That may be true, but they're still more delicate than say blacktop or concrete. oildrops snowblowers etc.
to each his or her own really. I have a paver path, but currently an older concrete driveway. if I redo the driveway, it will be either concrete or blacktop. I'd do a paver patio. To me, function over form on the driveway, I'll change my oil and work on my car and no matter how careful I am, things happen.

Theirs was done 7 years ago. So maybe the sand thing is true, but the rest still holds true
