9 month old gagging on anything non-puree
My 9 month old DD gags on anything that is not a puree. I will try giving her little pieces of food (ex egg) and even puffs broken up but she will gag when she eats it... i feel like at this rate we are going to be stuck w/ purees forever.. any tips or advice?

This happened to my son as well. He started to finally eat cheerios around 10-11 months. I had to put them on his tray so he could feed himself.

They have to get used to the consistency and texture of whole foods. That's one of the reasons I skipped purees completely.

Try not to break the foods up. Give large pieces of fruit or vegetables to gnaw on and get used to the foods as they are.

9 month old gagging on anything non-puree
I am having the same problem with my 9 month old dd. She was gagging on everything, a lot of times even throwing up when eating any solids. I asked the dr and she told me for some babies have bad gag reflexes and they just have to outgrow it. She also said it may be a texture thing and to try to take one of those finger toothbrushes and rub it all over their gums and tongue to try to get them used to different textures. We started giving dd stage 3 foods and the first few days she was gagging but tonight we had success! She still gagged a little but seems to have done much better. Its frustrating but it seems like sometimes they just need more practice.

Re: 9 month old gagging on anything non-puree
My DS had sensory issues so I had him in OT and speech. He is now 6 years old and totally different child. Of course this doesn't mean your child has a feeding issue, but I learned a lot in his therapies. Heck, the kid was on baby food till 2 and then would only eat toast with PB or pretzels. It was either pureed food or crunchy stuff. He couldn't understand swallowing anything else. 1 - she could be still too young so give it time. They do say babies are fine on formula or BM till 1 and food early on is practice. 2- never give Stage 3 baby food. All therapists say it will most likely cause gagging bc it's too chunky. 3 - try tiny little pieces first to get her used to a new texture. Too big and she can choke on, but crush up the puff and put the powder on her tongue. 4 - sometimes they choke bc it's not getting chewed on enough so I would start with a pretzel stick and put it on the side of his mouth so he knew to swish it to the side of his teeth to chew it up before swallowing.
9 months is still young and keep practicing and working on it. It will take time. I'd only get concerned when they're closer to 1. As long as all her other milestones are being met then she's fine.
