It's not racist but it's stereotyping...in the urban terms "Becky" refers to the typical white girls.
Rappers use the term "Becky" in their songs all the time to refer to white girls who offer up good fellatio. It has been out there for a long time in that industry that white women love to perform those services so are often referred to as a "Becky" or they even call the act itself a "Becky" (Plies sings a beautiful song about it lol)
So I don't consider it racist but it's stereotyping most definitely.
Replace said singer with a white singer, change becky to sha nay nay, and 100% bet you there would be a lot of people up in arms.
Thanks for the explanation! I didn't know that about Becky.. very interesting! I think maybe I didn't think of that stereotype since everyone is insinuating Becky is Rachel Roy, and she's half Indian. I wonder if that's why everyone else hasn't picked up on it?

I agree. I don't necessarily view it as racist more of a stereotype really. Like ratchett.
FWIW I don't necessarily agree with the beehive's threats but I do believe that Rachel Roy does deserve some fallout. There have been rumors about this for years. So the albums drops and what does she do minutes after? Goes on Instagram and posts "good hair don't care" and all this other stuff. If that isn't stirring the pot I don't know what is. And now she says it was lighthearted fun. Really? If you can't take the heat she should have stayed out of it.

I'm a Beyonce fan so I'm probably in the minority here. (& I didn't attack Rachel Roy or Rachel Ray.. & thought that whole thing was hilarious). LOL. I actually really appreciate her putting out an album that shows it's not always all peachy keen and beautiful in life, that's she's not perfect, and that sh*t hits the fan sometimes. I totally think Jay-Z cheated but they reconciled and we don't hear that story too often.. so I'm glad she's telling it.

Wow, this is honestly news to me. I had no clue about this "Becky" term. Interesting. And yea, def sounds like double standard bs to me.
OK this just popped in my head but just realized in the beginning of Baby Got Back from way back in the day the stereotypical valley girl white girl was like "Oh my God Becky look at her butt". Wonder if it comes form there or started way back then. Or is just a silly coincidence.

No, it's not racism. Perhaps you have your vocabulary mixed up, but it's not racism. Last I checked white people have never been oppressed. The ignorance in your statement is astounding.

Re: Thoughts on the whole Beyonce Lemonade thing?
how is not racism calling all white girls Becky??
so if I sterotyped all black teens wearing hoodies as thugs, that wouldnt be racist?
i dont get it??
the definition of sterotyping is: A stereotype is a preconceived notion, especially about a group of people. Many stereotypes are racist, sexist, or homophobic.
the fact that I need a f**king urban dictionary cheat sheet to understand half the shit she is saying is ridiculous.

I'm sorry, but I don't think they're calling white girls Becky here.
"Becky with the good hair" is not a reference to white girls at all. Good hair in particular refers to hair that's not kinky like typical African American hair but when one says that they're not talking about white girls, they're talking about a dark skinned girl with 'soft' hair instead of kinky hair.

Yes- I used to work with several black women so I got the 'good hair' reference because I remember a few conversations about hair and perms and relaxers. But otherwise it would have gone over my head.

I didn't read any posts on this thread (I will tonight when the kids are sleeping and I have time to catch up) but I will say this...
These two are master manipulators. They control their image. They would not have released these lyrics let alone making it available on Tidal if they didn't know what they were doing. Every time "gossip" comes out about them it's right before a tour and album. This is pr and image marketing at its finest. They exactly what they're doing.
I used to like them....years ago.

Thoughts on the whole Beyonce Lemonade thing?
I didn't see the "Becky with the good hair" as racist at all. I don't see it as focusing on a white woman - since I've usually heard it in reference to African American women, or mixed race, who have softer, manageable hair.
I know that Becky can be considered as "basic b*tch" slang but in this particular case, I just assumed she really was talking about someone with good hair, such as Rachel Roy.

Yup, all of this. That e-online article may have said that 'Becky' is supposed to mean a Caucasian but I disagree. It doesn't make any logical sense, plus, Rachel Roy isn't Caucasian, she's mixed.
