Sean Penn and Lee Daniels have made peace — but to get there, Daniels had to eat humble pie and write a check.

The two have been in court since last year when Penn sued Daniels for defamation because the director had accused the actor of being violent to women.

Penn filed a $10 million suit in Manhattan state court.

In a statement released Wednesday, Daniels now says “I am so sorry that I have hurt you, Sean, and I apologize and retract my reckless statements about you.”

“How thoughtless of me. You are someone I consider a friend, a brilliant actor and true Hollywood legend and humanitarian,” Daniels adds.
Daniels also has to write a check — for an undisclosed amount — to Penn’s foundation for Haiti.

The fracas started last September when Daniels told The Hollywood Reporter, which first reported the settlement, that the domestic abuse problems of Empire star Terrence Howard were no different than those that faced by Marlon Brandon and Sean Penn.

“All of a sudden he’s some f---in’ demon. That’s a sign of the time, of race, of where we are right now in America,” Daniels was quoted as saying.

Penn objected in his lawsuit saying he had never been arrested, let alone convicted, of any domestic abuse and one ex-wife, Madonna, filed a statement backing him up.
In the statement released by Penn's publicist, Daniels said:

“I too have been the subject of false attacks by others, like those made here. My most important role is as a father, and it is important to me that my children learn that is is wrong to reference gossip as fact, as I did here.

“That can be very damaging and hurtful. Domestic Violence is a very serious issue. My comments were cavalier; it was not my intention to diminish the severity of the issue, but rather to express a view regarding the disparate treatment of men of color in our national conversation.”

“I apologize again for the distress that this has caused you and your family.”

Penn issued a statement in which he said “I accept Lee’s heartfelt apology and appreciate the sincerity with which it was delivered.”
