Spinoff- at what age would you let DC go away with a friend?

I'm just curious, at what age would you let your DC go away for a weekend with another family? I take older DS away for his bday instead of having a party. He has mentioned wanting to take a friend. I know any of my friends would be ok with me taking their kid, but what if he decides he wants to invite a school friend? They will be in 5th grade.
I remember taking friends to Florida for a week with my family, probably starting around 5th or 6th grade.

With a friend and not a family member- probably 5th grade I'd say.
Family member like my sister, sooner of course

Same, around 10 or so assuming they have already slept out somewhere overnight.

He's already had sleepovers with any of his friends he might ask.

We owned a beach house about 3 hours from where I grew up and I started taking friends with me in 3rd grade. We had been in school together since we were 4 and our parents were close. I also started going to a week at sleep away camp in 3rd grade as well.

My kids are still so little right now (3 and 7) so I cannot even fathom this scenario. Honestly though, it's one of those things that I don't see a need for. We vacation as a family, I would feel weird about my kids going on someone else's vacation. *IF* I ever did allow it, I would want them in high school age.

My DD is almost 9, and I could see letting her do this within the next year, with some of her closest friends (whose families I know well).

I'm pretty conservative in general but I agree...I can't imagine my 9 year old sleeping at a friend's house, so sending her away with someone is not even on my radar...that said, around middle school I started bringing friends away with us and going away with friends that I was close to...

My daughter is 9 and over the summer we are going to bring her best friend along on a weekend trip. Her mom and I are good friends and our girls spend tons of time together so I know the child well enough to feel comfortable.

If my daughter was not an only child I do not think this is something that would be on our radar. Also, the child we're bringing has been her best friend since kindergarten, she is practically part of our family.

I agree, but I think it's because I have 2 kids, they are close in age, and we spend SO much time running around, that our family vacations is our 'forced' reconnent time. Time to spend together with no distractions.
We alos vacation with friends alot who have other kids, so the kids have 'other' people to play with ..........

I understand why a family with an only child would bring a friend .......I'd probably say 10, depending on the kid, and the family.

I think I feel the same.

Too many variables to consider for me to feel comfortable.

I'm taking a kid with me to NASA next month. But its a girl scout outing. Her mother isn't coming. As troop leader I'm taking her with me. We are traveling together with another mom and her daughter. They are all 2nd grade. Out of 7girls 5 moms are staying overnight. 2 are not, but only one isn't making the 3 1/2hour drive east to Houston.

Me? Um, no. Not just anyone. I think if it was her bestie whom I have known her mom since before the girls even hung out, maybe. But I doubt it. At least not out of town for a long while yet. I have this thing about AJ leaving the town I'm in. One of us has to be in the same city as her. Overnight at her house, no biggie. But leave the city limits without us? Nope. Sorry Charlie. I don't know when I'll ever be ready for that.

It depends on who the friend is. If it's a child who's family I know well and who my child feels comfortable with, then probably around 8.
A friend we don't know well but know casually, may 12 or 13.

I don't have any families that I know well enough. If I did I'd say 13.

If I knew the parents well I would definitely be okay with it at the 5th grade level.

I went on vacation with my friends and their families all the time but that was mostly in High School. I am sure my mom would have allowed it sooner but it just never came up. 18 seems a little extreme to ME but only because some kids go off to college at 17!

Ha me too

I'd probably say around 10ish. But like I've said before on these posts, my DS goes to his dad's every other weekend and I have no control on what he does there, so my perspective is a little different.

I also had a summer house growing up and kids definitely starting coming out around 10

Re: Spinoff- at what age would you let DC go away with a friend?

We are taking my son's best friend on a weekend trip leaving tomorrow. They are in 7th grade and have been friends since kindergarten. I would let my son travel with his friend's family without a second thought, and have several times. I had no idea this would even be considered odd or undesirable.

I guess it makes it even more appalling that I will have his friend with us for most of Mother's Day. Chat Icon

Agree. My oldest is 7, and I don't ever see this happening. I wonder if I would feel differently with an only child? Since I have more than 1, it would be much more of w hassle splitting them up Chat Icon

This site is not he norm.. I would take it with a grain of salt.

To answer your question: My Stepson was about 10 or 11, I think I would allow the same for my DS for friends of parents I knew well and if he stood over their house before. But since I'm horrible at the whole play date thing it wouldn't come up. My sister has taken my son for a week vacation at the shore when he was 5.

ITA! No one ever went away with friends when they were younger? I know I did. I want to say it started around 11 - 12ish.

To answer the question - I would say around 6th grade I guess. Of course it depends on the relationship. My boys are almost 7 and 5. We have a bunch of family friends I trust 100% so if the relationship stays this close and the opportunity comes up I'd allow it.
