FBA- Functional Behavior Assessment

Has anyone's child had this assessment? Any info you can provide? This was just recommended for my son and i've never heard of it before... Thx!

FBA- Functional Behavior Assessment

My son had one in elementary school. It was basically a series of observations. Different teachers and/or teachers aids would sit in class and observe him at different times of the day and in different activities. The goal is to see what specifically triggers the behaviors in question. They draw up a detailed report, which they will provide. It tell exactly what happened during each observation down to the minute.

Once its done, they analyze it to help with accommodations. If behavior is triggered by chatter with certain students, they may opt for a seat change. If its triggered by silent reading, they may choose to have him sit nearer to the teacher so the teacher can prompt him to stay on task.

FBAs are completed by the school psychologist.

The goal is to identify the function(s) of problematic behaviors and to determine whether or not a behavior plan is warranted. It usually entails classroom observations, log keeping by teachers/aides, records review, and interview with the parents sometimes.

Not to hijack, but when would one do a FBA? Is this something that you have to request through the school or does the school request one due to a child's behavior in the class?

My son will be 3 in June and it was recommended by the evaluator when she visited his class. Her main issue was that he poked a child in the class three times during circle time and she couldnt understand why. The teachers also complain that he is terrible with sharing and will grab a toy out of of another kid's hands. That sort of stuff...

I pushed for one for my son bc he's almost completely opposite at school than what he is like at home. At school he won't listen, runs around the classroom, pushes his teachers buttons, sometimes won't go to circle, etc. I think the classroom itself just isn't firm enough with him, but they were threatening to take him out of an integrated room bc of everything going on. He's now 3.5.

My son was having issues in class and I requested one. It can sometimes result in a BIP (Behavior Intervention Plan) and sometimes it shows the needs can be met through other means. My son didn't get an official BIP. He got a positive behavior support plan. It has made a world of difference. SO SO glad I pushed for the FBA.
