Did you stop taking antidepressants?

If you were taking meds when you got your BFP what did you do?

How did you decide whether or not to stay on them and who helped you make that decision?

I know that this is probably a controversial topic as here is such a strong stigma surrounding psychiatric issues. I myself suffer from some depression and some anxiety and am now trying to figure out my best course of action. Most of my doctors are telling me to stop but nobody wants to take responsibility for helping me to stop. I feel my psych. Had a more aggressive weaning process that has not worked for me in the past. I haven't even had my BFP for a week but am feeling quite overwhelmed with all of he literature for staying on or going off of meds.

Any guidance or resources are greatly appreciated. And most importantly I will not make my final decision without Doctor supervision and DH.

Re: Did you stop taking antidepressants?

You're early enough that nothing is passing through the placenta yet. Not until closer to 8 weeks. Most anti-depressants are not safe during pregnancy and you really do need to come off. I would start weening immediately. It's not safe to come off cold turkey, but like I said, since you're still so early in the pregnancy, I think weening over the course of a few weeks won't do any harm.

Really though, you're best bet is to talk directly to your OB. Find out what he or she says about the particular medication you're taking. If it's not safe during pregnancy than speak to your psychiatrist about weening right away.

I suffer from very bad anxiety and was on meds for quite some time. But throughout both of my pregnancies, maybe the hormones...who knows, I haven't had any issues not being on medication. I stopped taking them about a month prior to when I started TTC with my first. I did, however, have to go back on them after my DS was born.

its also important to know, if antidepressants are needed and will help than you can stay on them. Do you have a history of post partum? many ladies remain on low doses when preg. bc its better to have a mentally health mom than one who cant deal with the pressure and anxiety

Speak to your psychiatrist and OB.

It was really situational for me as my mom went through cancer and passed about 5 years ago. It's just so hard once your body gets so used to it. I'm scared enough about morning sickness that this just adds to the stress I'm not trying to bring on myself. I will definitely check next with my OB. This is my first so I haven't had any experiences with this yet. On a positive note I have read that the Wellbutrin is pretty safe during pregnancy. So maybe the doc can just focus on getting me off the lexapro first.

Re: Did you stop taking antidepressants?

You really need to speak to a psychiatrist. They can better assist with discussing classes of drugs and the risk vs. benefits and create a plan for pregnancy and post pregnancy. They may also recommend natural pregnancy safe ways to deal with the depression and anxiety. You also need to take into account weaning off whatever you are on if it's not in a safe category. I'd go ASAP. My OB and Psyc. we're in agreement to be off but happy mommy= happy baby so we took it one day at a time and left options open. I happened to do really well off meds while pregnant as scared as I was having dealt with MC's. I saw my therapist a little more often which helped. Good luck!

Did you stop taking antidepressants?

I started meds when I had horrible PPD after having my first child. My OB told me to stop taking them with this pregnancy, so I did. And it was HORRIBLE. My therapist and my high risk doctor spoke and agreed it was better for me to be on them than off. So I went back on and am finally just starting to feel like myself again. It took weeks to regulate again.

So my advice is to have your doctors talk with each other. And don't be afraid to speak your mind. My high risk doctor said Wellbutrin was classified as a a Class C solely because the other drugs are in that category. It really belongs in Class B. Her and my therapist agreed on what my max dose should be and made sure I was comfortable with it as well. Good luck!
