Flooring in baby room

Currently, our bedroom is what will be the nursery, we are in the process of completing renovations to our master bedroom shortly and then we are working on the nursery. We have an older home and we are going to be re- sheet rocking the walls and redoing the molding and what not. In the room currently that will be the twins room is a laminate floor. It looks so bad, it's in good condition but was likely THE CHEAPEST flooring at the store, but it's in really good shape. Do you think I should leave the laminate and get an area rug? Would it be better to rip it up and carpet the room? The windows were replaced in the bedroom 5 months ago and we will be reinsulating when we sheet rock, but I want to make sure the room is warm enough for them. I mean I'm sure this room is going to be trashed by the time they are 5 and there will likely be a million stains on the floors so that's my only hesitation with doing carpet. If I get an area rug I was going to buy one to pretty much fit the room. Eventually they will be split up and we will likely redo the room when they split up, but we plan to keep them together a good 5-6 years. What do you guys think?

Flooring in baby room

I ripped up the carpeting when doing my kids' rooms and put down hardwood looking vinyl flooring. Then I put down a little area rug in their rooms.

Thanks all!!! I was thinking leaving it too for the fact I'm sure the floors will be a disaster by year 2. I'll buy a thicker area rug. The laminate in there is just so paper thin but I think in the long run it will be better cleanliness and budget wise!

Re: Flooring in baby room

We have hardwood and an area rug. Its very easy to clean.

BUT, when we lived in our townhouse, my DS' room had a thin Berber carpet which hid stains really well and I do kind of miss it. Especially because by 2 he was nose-diving out of his crib and the carpet broke his fall several times. I can't imagine what that would have been like if he had hit wood floor. We just had our wood floors refinished but we're seriously considering re-carpeting the 2 kids rooms with a low-pile carpet. The problem with wood is that it gets scratched easily, and as kids they WILL scratch it. There's also no real noise buffer with wood, so with their bedrooms on the upper level, if they're moving around or playing on their wood floors you can hear everything in the rooms below. The carpet kind of buffers the sound a little.

I'll be different.

We covered perfectly beautiful hardwood floors with carpeting in both of our children's rooms and I don't regret it at all.

DS's room is over the garage so his room gets quite cold in the winter. I wanted the extra insulation b/c his floor would be FREEZING during winter nights. While we did his room, we also did carpeting in DD's room (and the hallway and steps). None of the carpets are stained.

I like it b/c it's much cozier. I also grew up with carpeting on our bedroom floors and never had a problem with stains or anything.

DD's room is hardwood with an area rug.

I agree with pp about the puke. DD doesn't spend a ton of time in her room except for diaper changes and sleeping but she's puked all over just about every other surface in the house. I no longer buy anything that isn't machine washable

Tough call. I would certainly not carpet if you plan to rip down the walls to resheetrock. It's very difficult to get that dust out of carpet. I would leave the linoleum, put large throw rugs that you can roll up and out when renovations start.

We have hardwood in our kids room and it's great. Easy to clean up messes, no staining. We have area rugs to make it more cozy. My oldest is 5 and there has been no damage to the floors.

Since you are doing the room over, I would just choose new laminate flooring. There is no furniture there currently, so you're not disturbing anything, and it's very durable so having kids in there isn't really going to affect how it looks in a few years.

We don't have wall to wall carpet anywhere in our house. When we bought, we ripped it all up and put a dark bamboo down. We just have area rugs throughout the house.

Re: Flooring in baby room

With DC 1 as a baby until 2 puked more than a few times on the carpet in the bedroom. It was AWFUL. I would have chosen laminate or some other easy clean flooring over that carpet any day. Plus a throw rug that can be washed.
