pediatric dentist

Hi ladies , i do not come on here often but the few times i do post i always feel your responses whether they are with or not with me i know i can get honest caring answers here without being judged ( have been beating myself up alot lately cause of this )

My dd is now 5 she went for he first dentist visit like a year ago and it went off perfect clean bill of health they got to do a cleaning just no x rays .

fast forward to this past visit a few months ago ( welcome to the $hit show ) well she was cool about going we practiced at home what it was gonna be like role played for weeks and when we got there she was ok ...till we got called into the room she got on the chair and they tried to x ray right off the bat this is where my story goes down hill ...x rays didnt happen i ended up sitting in the chair holding her while they do a quick cleaning and floride treatment she was getting herself so worked up she puked ( which used to be norm when she was little she was that kid who would cry till she puked )
dentist came in and said she has two cavities so we had do go back in two weeks.

again practiced read books prepped and she was cool we get there she had benadryl in her we get to the room to do sweet air and again freak out i had to sit and hold her she would breath the air properly yada yada the fillings never happened ( which in a way im glad cause then he refered us to another ped dentist in port jeff ....the app was this monday she was cool again till we got in the room she would sit in the chair so i had to hold her again the dentist was able to see she had FOUR CAVITIES !!! now im dying inside he said it could be from food genetics blah blah all i heard in my head was mom you dropped the ball you failed ur kid now she has to go through all this.

we now have an appotintment with with dr serino who was really nice and explained everything that is going to happen ...she is going to do oral sedation HOWEVER my husband and i also just found out at that appointment we will not be aloud to be in the room with her during this 1/2 hour procedure . I see both sides (obviously mine as a momma bear wanting to be with her baby to protect her is she needs or i feel she needs me ) and alos the dentist view who does not need me a non dentist or dr hovering over his shoulder while he tries to do his job and help my dd .
Im just so torn i know this needs to be done for the best interest of my daughter i just keep having these horrible visuals and dreams *( we have three weeks till her app) and i already have dreams of her being strapped down screaming for me and me not being able to reach her i know she will be drugged up and prob will not be calling for me or even remember the entire thing but i just need to hear from some of you moms and dads who may have went through this ......please no bashing i heard enough bashing on fb and im beating myown self up enough even though i know i shouldnt .

thank you for taking the time to read this long novel of a rant i just needed to get this out

A good friend of mine is going through this with her toddler. She's beating herself up so bad over it. So you're not alone! (I just text her telling her the same). It's no ones fault. It happens. Is there anyway they will let you peak in after she's sedated so you know she's okay? That would probably make me feel better. Knowing she's not screaming for you and she's comfortable. I would ask. Or get a second opinion with someone that will allow you to at least peak in.

Re: pediatric dentist

I have serious anxiety over dentists because of a very bad experience as a kid so I have very little tolerance if a dentist is rude or impatient with my DD. That said, she freaks out every time we go but has gotten a little better with the cleanings at least (now that I found a dental assistant we both like). I would insist nicely that you be allowed to just peek in and see that she's ok once they have her sedated or hold her hand while they do the sedation and then leave.

My daughter had to go under to have her arm set when she broke it a few years ago so I understand not being able to be a part of certain procedures but I think it's worth asking if you can just stay in the beginning to relieve a bit of the worry.

Yes, all of this.
I would NOT be ok with not at least being able to peek in or to be there as she was sedated.
Nobody tells me that I can't be with my child. If they continued to say no, I'd find another practice.

So sorry you're going through this. I understand not being allowed during the fillings but will they let you stay there until she's sedated and then leave?

This is absolutely not your fault. Some kids are just predisposed to cavities. My husband is one of them. I had cavities growing up too.

Re: pediatric dentist

thank you ladies i really appreciate the responses .
it is an oral sedation we have to go to the appointment she will take the drink in the waiting room with us and sit with us for an hour for it to kick in then the nurse will come take her from us to the back room without us to give her sweet air , then novacain then do the 1/2 hour procedure .
so she will be awake during this whole process just really drugged up to make her relax. when it is over we can go in the room with her during the oxygen process when they get her off the sweet air then she will be done and take her home . :(

So sorry. I've never been through it with my DD, so can't recommend anyone. I would look around for someone who lets you stay because I would want to stay and know she was ok. I remember getting sweet air and dental work and it was scary even with my mom standing there.
And, sorry that this will scare you more, but a friend of mine had the wrong permanent teeth removed as a child. Multiple teeth and then they had to go back and remove the bad teeth too.

Re: pediatric dentist

I'm sorry you are going through this. My ds1 is 3 and his teeth are not perfect. We have not done any work yet the dentist said a filling most likely will be in our future. It stresses me out so bad that I think about it almost every day obviously because I brush his teeth morning and night. For me, my main concern is that my ds is relaxed and does not feel pain so if oral sedation, sweet air, and novocaine is what they suggest that is what I would do 100%. I would ask if I could be there maybe outside the door to know she is ok. I wouldn't want her to be screaming for me and for me to not know.

It is not your fault and you are doing everything possible to make it an ok experience for her.

Re: pediatric dentist

Are these baby teeth? If they are not molars I would get another opinion from someone you trust.

I just read the article. Very interesting and seems to be on the forefront I am going to ask about this at my next dental visit.

Re: pediatric dentist

I just took my almost 7 year old son to the dentist (pediatric) 2 days ago. He hadn't been since he was 3. Turns out he has 4 small cavities in between his bottome molars. He has to have a baby root canal. He is high functioning autistic and has sensory issues with oral aversions. He is going Sept 1 for the root canal and I won't be allowed in the room during it. It i more traumatic on us I think. He had to have an endoscopy done when he ws 3 and I was beyond traumatized from it. He cried for less then a minute with the iv and that was it. We went to a pediatric dentist that has a special needs dr on staff. It helped a lot. I am a little scared about the nitrous that they will give him as it may make hiim freak out more. But I think I am better off not in the room. Maybe you can be in the hallway.

When my DD was 2 1/2 she needed a root canal. I was beside myself with worry. We used "That Broadway Smile" in Massapequa and they were wonderful.
So comforting and walked us through the whole process. We were allowed to be in the room while she was put under but we did have to leave while they actually did the root canal. A nurse came out practically every 5 minutes to give us updates.
We were allowed back once she was coming out of the anesthesia.
If you are looking for a 2nd opinion , I would recommend them.
Good luck to you!
