what method and/or plan would you recommend to someone who wants to go from a soft, couch potato to a hard body?

not just lose a few pounds or fit into a special dress for a special occasion, i mean a complete overhaul.

You need to set a meal plan and training regimen. You can look at the bikini body guide. But know that the before and after pics of those women are slightly exaggerated because the woman are doing a lot of other exercise besides.

It's a ton of dedication with food. Even at my best with a trainer I was never able to achieve it because I'd fall off the food wagon too much and couldn't give up my wine.

Agreed. Diet plan is really important.

I've been working with a trainer for a couple months and she is big on heavy lifting 2x a week. An example is when doing simple bicep curls using a machine at the gym, she started me at 30lbs and I was flying through the first few. She stopped me right there and said that won't do anything. We then settled at 55lbs, where starting with #1 it was a little struggle - that was the right weight. 3 sets of 15. First set I got to 15. Second set I got to about 11 and third set I think I got to 7 or 8. THATS the kind of lifting that will really strengthen you.

I'm now at 70 lbs 3 sets of 20 in just 2 months at 2x a week.

I'm stronger the. I've ever been and I'm surprised with how strong I really am at every workout.

I do some sort of cardio 5x a week for 30-40 minutes:

elliptical - I use a hard pre set so I'm always challenging myself

Treadmill or walking outside - I walk at 3.8-4.0 and run at 5.0 for about 1.5 minutes every 3 minutes

Dance/Zumba class

Step aerobics class

And twice a week - heavy lifting. Arms, weighted squats and lunches , TRX training using my body weight, etc

And it's a process because you need to lose body fat and gain muscle. To do that there are specific foods and workouts that would be the best way to do that.

IMO it's not an easy task on your own.

no. not an easy task. i've been failing miserably for many, many years.

i'm getting older and i want to be able to be HEALTHY and STRONG as i get older.

the more i see SO's mother and how sick she is and what a HORRIBLE diet she has, the more i realize that this is no longer for vanity... although looking great would be a wonderful "adverse reaction" lol.

but i also don't want to waste time just walking around the block thinking "at least i'm doing SOMETHING."

not sure if that makes sense.

thanks for the info.

i'm going to start looking in my area for someone to work with.

As pp said it's mostly diet and I believe training as well. Years ago I had a personal trainer who was more about me getting healthy and strong. We did a lot of strengthening excercises and of course cardio but focused on the strengthening piece. He also took all my measurements, my bmi, everything and wrote me a very tailored meal plan to follow for 2 weeks straight. Literally for snacks he would write 8 almonds or whatever and said don't have 9! Lol. It was great but obviously extremely hard.

After 2 weeks we remeasured and he retailored my meal plan again (added in an additional serving of protein only since I told him I was always hungry Chat Icon). And then after a bout a month I was able to have more of a "normal" meal plan. He didn't call it diet bc diets are short lived said it was about meal planning and healthy lifestyle.

I felt a drastic change in my life those few months. I lost weight (although when I was younger I didn't have that much to lose), but felt healthier and less tired (which I attribute to drinking water constantly. I always had my water container with me at all times). My trainer was expensive but worth it. He moved to Hawaii shortly after. Said it was more his lifestyle Chat Icon

Diet is definitely one of the most important components. I work out A LOT, but my eating is pretty average. I started following lots of fitness people on Instagram. A lot do Bikini Body Guide. I did it for 12 weeks and I liked it and noticed that my arms were more defined. I did not follow the diet plan though. I plan on modifying my diet once I go back to work next week.

Good luck!

My normal week:
Spin videos 4 days a week (45-60 mins)
Outside cycling 2 days a week (45-60 mins)
BBG arms - 1x a week
BBG abs - 1x a week
Legs - 1x a week
I sometimes add an additional strength training day if I have time.
