does anybody knows about GHI??
Hi... Im 43 years old and I already had 2 inseminations and 2 IVF treatments overseas. They all failed and I was referred by a friend to go to a doctor in New York City.. I went to his office and after I left, I knew I had to have a treatment there but the most frustrating thing was to find the insurance that will help pay for the treatment... The doctor's assistant mentioned GHI... I went in the website but I have no idea how to enroll to get GHI benefits...Does anybody knows about this??... How do I get enroll?...What do I have to do??... Please help !!...Otherwise I see this dream of being a mom fading away because I do not have the financial possibility to do such expensive treatment here. Thanks and good luck to all of you that want to be a mom!

Re: does anybody knows about GHI??
Im not sure how GHI works but some girls who are teachers on here have GHI and it has comprehensive coverage. but if you are buying into a private plan, not sure how that works or how much that coverage would cost.
I have Aetna but my employer (plan sponsor) elected 15K in LIFETIME ivf benefits and 15K lifetime in Pharma coverage for the meds. I squeaked out two cycles with RMA. but if you are over 40 and /or your FSH levels are above a 19 they wont even approve you for IVF.
so its really plan specific with the coverage allowances.

They were probably talking about the GHI teachers plan. Its a decent plan. I'm not sure what other GHI plans offer. I know GHI has criteria that has to be met before IVF is approved.
Maybe post on the main Families Helping Families board a question about how to get a certain insurance and know what their plans offer. There is more traffic there and maybe someone knows the deal.
Wishing you lots of luck. Everything about infertility is so stressful.

Re: does anybody knows about GHI??
There are different branches for GHI mine was under Police Dept. There is one for NYC teachers and others so all might be different. I can tell you only my experience. I was TTC for 3 years and under 35 years old.
6 IUI's must be done to do IVF (unless Dr. writes a note if there is a medical reason to push IVF) This was all covered , only had to pay the co-pay
Lifetime of 3 IVF is covered and I believe 3 Frozen Transfers are covered (I am not too sure about the frozen because I think something changed with that) There was a co-pay for IVF which was around $700 and my meds were covered too also just a small co-pay.
My plan has very good coverage considering some insurances don't cover much, every dr visit which was pretty frequent was $30 co-pays so it does add up. Your best bet it to call them to see how to enroll. Good Luck!

There are different GHI Plans. The one they were probably referencing was the GHI plan for NYC employees (city teachers , cops, firefighters, etc).

Make sure you read the fine print. MANY plans wont cover treatments on someone 43 or 44 and older
