How do I keep sliced apples fresh in my kids' lunch bag?
My daughter loves apple slices and I'd love to be able to send them to school with her for snack every once in a while. How do I keep the apple slices from browning? My son also likes yogurt. Will the yogurt cups stay good in his insulated lunch bag? He has one of those character bags from TRU.

For apple slices, lemon juice works, but if your daughter doesn't like sour, not sure how to fix the browning problem.
For the yogurt, we get the squeezable one in the tubes. We freeze it, and then when he takes it to school it is still cold when he gets to eat it.

Anything with citric acid will work, so orange juice would work just as well as lemon juice.

Do you just dip the apples in anything with citric acid? Lightly brush it on?

I will usually just toss the apples with the juice and make sure all the exposed white is covered with it

Does it give the apples a sour taste?

If you go too crazy with the lemon juice it can. Not super sour but a definite lemon flavor. DH actually likes it. However as a PP mentioned, you can use orange juice as well- which would have no sour taste.

I read a trick with salt and though I've only tried it once so far it worked great. Just add a teaspoon or so if salt to a bowl of water and throw the slices in. Then make you lunch or whatever and let soak about 5 minutes. Rinse then off and bag them up. You can't taste a difference and they stayed perfectly fresh!

I just slice them and put cinnamon on them. There is nothing wrong with brown apples, other than their physical appearance of them, so the cinnamon I guess masks it to an extent. My DD never complains

I know there is nothing wrong with an app,e with a little brown on it, but my daughter will literally not eat it if it has any brown on it. Is she doesn't eat her sliced apples fast enough and they start browning, she will throw it all In the garbage I'm hoping she doesn't want apples for school snack as often as she wants them at ho,e for snack.

My kids don't eat skin so I drive thru McDonalds and grab about 10 bags for the week for their snack. They are 50 cents a bag and they don't go to waste.

I toss the apples in a little lemon juice, my DD has never noticed the taste. I send yogurt every day but I keep a cold pack in her lunch bag.

I buy the individual packages of apple slices - a lot more $$$, but it's a healthy alternative for my kids who fight me on healthy stuff.......apples and PB they will eat in bulk, so I send it often.
This is what I do too. It is pricey, but IMO it's worth it. DS also wont touch the apples if they have any brown on them.

I would do this if I could find the apples without the peel. My DD will only eat them if they are peeled

Re: How do I keep sliced apples fresh in my kids' lunch bag?
I take an apple slicer, slice the apple and then use a rubber band to keep the apple together, core and all. Then at lunch/snacl, they remove the rubber band, eat the apple slices and throw away the core.

Exactly what I was going to post - works great!
My son goes to school every day with a yogurt and cheese stick for lunch. He likes the Stonyfield Yogurt tubes. We just keep it in his lunch bag with a couple of those freeze-its and it stays cold.

I do something similar to the rubber band trick, I cut it with an apple slicer, then wrap it back up with cellophane.
