" bring your contractor"
listings say "bring your contractor" which means the house needs a complete gut. We will probably gut the kitchen and most likely the bathrooms of any house we purchase.I have VERY specific needs for my kitchen.
how does one go about bringing a contractor? I personally dont know of any contractors. Do I just get a referral and bring one to a home we want to put an offer on?
does anyone know of any exceptional contractors that are super OCD??

That's weird. I'd think unless you know one, what contractor would want to go visit a house he is not even sure you will buy? My uncle is one and I don't even think I'd ask him to come visit houses with me!
Good house vibes on this one

house vibes crushedlast night. found one that just needed carpet taken out in the bedrooms.5 bedrooms victorian! kitchen close to perfection, and under budget!! but according to dhs fam that lives in the area, the zoned schools arent great. FFFFML i still think we should proceed because we dont have kids yet. by the time we do and they go to school, it will change. im just going to roll over and play dead.
so back to LI.....to over pay for a sh!thole just to put another 200k in to fix. woooosaaaa

Ahhhh that stinks. My brother has been looking for over a year, but in Westchester, and is sooo frustrated by the process too. The market is crazy right now. Something will come along soon

I wouldn't let a school district opinion sway you that much UNLESS it's truly valid. I'm sure there are people who think even the BEST districts are crappy, just because everyone has to have a (negative) opinion.

Re: " bring your contractor"
its true...its the middle school thats really bad. Which sucks because its a freakin castle.
lets say taxes are 25k. 19 of the 25k goes twds school taxes. That district is HUGE and my 19k a year will be going to the schools that my kid isnt zoned for.
the feedback we got are form people that work in the district as well as a student

You can always send your child(ren) to private school. We picked a lower ranked school district and are literally paying half the taxes we would three blocks away in a top school district knowing if dd is not getting what she needs from the public school we can out her in private or catholic school. My dd is only 2.5 so we have time before we need to even think about schools.

Could you put your future children in private school? I grew up in a great district (26) but still went to private school all my life.

I get it. When we bought our house it was important to me that my future unborn child lived in a neighborhood that was kid friendly and children played outside without needing a play date. I also wanted a public school that was diverse. Fast forward 4 years and I am living in a neighborhood that offers nearly everything on my list of must haves when we were house hunting. I did compromise a bit on my kitchen must have but we plan to expand it down the road.

Re: " bring your contractor"
If you call around, you can probably get a contractor to meet you there. We did it when we were interested in buying a house. We wound up not buying the house and it wasn't a huge deal.
I wouldn't buy a house - especially one that I was planning on gutting entire rooms and spending a lot of money on - if I didn't like the school district. Trust me, as someone whose only been in a house for 2.5 years and already considering selling, it was a lot of effort to get this house in order only to move so soon.
