Maternity leave when not covered by FMLA?

Hi all - I started a new job 1 month ago (actually the first day of my LMP - I'm convinced that getting rid of the awfulness of my old job let me conceive), so will not be there for 1 year before giving birth. Therefore, I won't be covered under FMLA.

Right now, my job offers no paid maternity leave anyway - just the FMLA leave for after a year.

Have any of you been/are any of you in this situation? If so, how did you handle it at work?

Due to the size of my office, I was not covered by FMLA. I took time without pay. My company was ok with that.
If you had private STD before getting pregnant that will cover pay.

It will be up to your company what their policy is.

Since you're only 4 weeks, I wouldn't worry about it. You have at least 2 months before you'll tell them anyway. And once you do, HR will tell you what you're entitled to.

I get std so I will just be taking the 6 weeks. I have no PTO left to use so can't extend my leave. I would still think you are entitled to the 6 or 8 weeks for recovery just not paid.

You are entitled to 6-8 weeks of STD which I believe is $150-$200 a week (I'm not exactly sure, my cousin said she got less than $1000 back for her 6 week STD earlier this year)

Re: Maternity leave when not covered by FMLA?

I gave birth 2 months after starting a new job. There was no paid maternity leave. ..you had to use personal, sick and vacation time. Since I just started I hadn't acrued any of that. They upfronted me 1 week of vacation time that I had to "pay" back by acruing it ( I was in the negative on vacation time that I had to build back up over time). After that 1 week I was unpaid. I took only 6 weeks off as that was all we could afford with me unpaid.
State disability was less than $200 a week after taxes. Horrible.

Just so you know FMLA is not paid leave. ..it just states they have to hold your job(or an equivalent job) for you for 6 weeks (or 8 weeks for a C section) but you still have to use your own leave time for that period. So even if you qualified for it, it wouldn't help with being paid.
