Is this a thing? Vaccination related.
Please don't quote.
My MIL and FIL are planning on coming over from Australia next year for a visit. We told them that February / March / August / first week of September would be a good time.
My BIL's wife just had a baby and my MIL said MIL and FIL (BIL is not coming with the baby) cannot leave the country until October 2017 after the baby is a year old because of vaccinations.
MIL is already my BEC. Is MIL just saying this to get her way? I've had previous issues with her and boundaries on when they can come over and stay with us (they are usually around for a few weeks more or less).
I'm just wondering if this is a thing?
TIA!

Re: Is this a thing? Vaccination related.
I would not fly with a baby internationally under 6 months because of vaccinations, and I could see a parent stretching that until a year since there are some that cannot be given at younger ages. So I could see them wanting to wait for the MMR. I also don't know Australian laws about vaccines which may very well stage that.

Unless the baby is also coming I don't see why vaccinations would affect them. Unless they think they will catch something here and get the baby sick when they return home.

Re: Is this a thing? Vaccination related.
But it's not the parent flying. It's the grandparents who do not want to fly; the baby will not be flying internationally.

So they don't want the grandparents flying internationally in case they bring back some sort of disease to their child?

Are the grandparents caretakers or see the baby often? If the parents (BIL and SIL) are neurotic I could see them not wanting anyone around the baby that could potentially get the baby sick before they've been fully vaccinated (which for the record is many many years later).

That doesn't make sense. Your in laws would be immune to any vaccine preventable illness- pertussis, diphtheria, polio, measles, rubella, mumps, chicken pox (they probably had measles, mumps, rubella, chicken pox and I'm thinking anyone this neurotic would make them get a TDAP before the baby was born). Anything they could bring back wouldn't be vaccine preventable so it's all moot.
I would 100% support not bringing the baby- I will not take my DD on a plane until she has MMR and chicken pox vaccines. But this just doesn't make sense.

Re: Is this a thing? Vaccination related.
I have never heard of this. I'm thinking either they got orders from BIL/SIL to not travel so they don't bring back anything (are they like that?), or she's using it as an excuse to get her way.

Re: Is this a thing? Vaccination related.
They're probably afraid the baby won't be able to see them if they travel, thinking they might give something to the baby... but i could also see it being an excuse.

No, they aren't like that. MIL, FIL, BIL, SIL and the first kid all went to Singapore when the first kid was 9 months old.

Never heard of it. Maybe BIL & SIL are afraid they'll bring something back so aren't going to bring the baby around MIL & FIL until after they're back a while?

Re: Is this a thing? Vaccination related.
I know some peds recommend no out of US travel until age 1 when they have had MMR and most of their shots. Some people follow, it some don't. But even if the parents follow that advice it should have nothing to do with your MIL and FIL coming only the child and parents.
