Another spin off...of Pro-Life Pro-Choice
For everyone that is pro-life what are your thoughts on life support.
The Jahi McMath comes to mind. The doctors fought the family in court because they declared her brain dead and wanted her taken off life support. The family fought to keep her on saying she was still alive. 3 yrs later and she is still on life support and shows signs of life.
I remember this case caused a big debate on here about the families decision to keep her on.
So my question for those who are pro-life what would your take be on a situation like this?
I'm pro-choice. But since I put the question out there I will answer. I feel it is nobody's right to force a family member to take a family member off life support. I can't imagine if this was my child and being forced to take such a final step that I would be against. I was sick for this family that they were faced with this while going through such a tragedy. I myself do not want to be kept on life support. And my family knows this. But in Jahi case she was/is a minor and if it was my child I'm not sure I could make that decision.
Here is her Facebook page to refresh your memory.
Please lets keep this respectful.

I am pro choice also but I think that it's up to the family to decide when to remove life support. I think that doctors can give a recommendation but that's it.

Re: Another spin off...of Pro-Life Pro-Choice
I agree that it is extremely hard and that I would not want a doctor to make that decision for me regarding my loved one. However, there is a reason that the hospital was suing and it wasn't just because they are heartless assholes. I was reading a similar story recently where a hospital sued and won the right to pull the plug on the plug on a brain dead toddler. The hospital's reasoning was that the resources and money allotted to the patient who will never awaken with any quality of life were better off being utilized for a patient that had a chance of suviving and that truly needed them. They stated that they had to turn away other cases because of the money being "wasted" (their terms, not mine) on a patient who was in reality dead. It sounds cruel, but I can kind of see the hospital's point.

That was pretty much the reason in the above case as well. The family is now responsible for all costs. Not sure why they didn't tell the family that she needed to be transferred out of their hospital if they choose to keep her on support. Instead of taking them to court to have her removed.

Re: Another spin off...of Pro-Life Pro-Choice
No one but the family has the right to make the decision.
I'm surprised that the child was not transferred to a skilled nursing facility, that's usually the norm when a patient is in a vegetative state.
DH's step dad is really sick now with heart and kidney issues, cancer, and we have decided that when the need arises, life saving measures should not be taken. We'll just let him go in peace. We have the health care proxy, so the decision is ours, and ours alone to make. FIL doesn't have quality of life right now, so what would he gain by us extending it ?

im pro-choice in all matters. government...doctors...whatever...should stay away from telling someone what to do with their bodies. and in this scenario...if there is no living will...then the family decides.

Re: Another spin off...of Pro-Life Pro-Choice
I have to say...after working a few months as an Oncology RN and seeing patients transferred from CCU to us for comfort care (which involved being kept comfortable while being allowed to pass away), I just don't know what to think. To think about saying goodbye to your child has got to be the most awful thing in the world. But this young girl is brain dead. They say she is growing before their eyes and blossoming into a teenager, however, it's been proven her neurological functioning is pretty much gone. Any movements she makes are spontaneous reflexes. She is growing because she is being kept alive via feeding tube and intubated measures. Her brain stem might be partially functioning, so she may very well take some breaths on her own while the machine takes over the rest, but this is not a life. This is not a child who is living. I couldn't watch my child like this.
I've seen families torn apart over keeping their loved one alive. Even when keeping them alive is adding to the pain and elongating the death process. It's just really sad :(
