I think it's unique. It would definitely have to go with last name.
Shortened version would be Van which isn't terrible for a boy.

When you first said it I was thinking a big NO! but the more I think about it, the more I like it. I am also not someone who likes nicknames but in this case I would definitely do a nickname like Van or Vander.

My husband went to law school at Vanderbilt, so that's what I think of. Not good for a name IMO.

Are they similar? One of my favorite girl names (wanted to use it before meeting DH) is very similar to our last name. I think it's a cool combination, but not sure if I should use it.
I don't think of Vanderbilt as a first name, sorry.
