Just got a call from the ob/gyn..Updated 8/11
SA came back low sperm count and low motility. My tests came back with no issues. They even have my eggs on the sono I went for last month. This is really hard since we never expected this.
Now what..... Can we conceive naturally???If so, what are the chances. And if not, what are my options. Is now the time to go to an RE??
I'm full of questions...sorry...I'm just soo crushed right now.
8/11 I asked for the results so that I could see them for myself. I'm glad I did.
According to these results he is "borderline". Motility was JUST below normal (greater than 50 being normal, and his was 45), sperm count just at the cut off point. She made it seem as if he had like 2 sperm in his reserve and that we would never be able to conceive naturally!!
GYN's are not experts in infertility, (as many of you have already said) and I'm off to an RE.

Re: Just got a call from the ob/gyn...
So sorry to hear about the news.
I have heard of a procedure along with IVF called (Intracytoplasmic sperm injection) - ICSI. I dont know too much about it but I have heard some of the girls on this board with male factor who have had this done.
Good Luck!

Re: Just got a call from the ob/gyn...
Like Juju said IVF using ICSI is used when there is a sperm issuie. Have IUI's will be of no help considering his condition. I wish you all the luck

Hey I'm sorry to hear about that.My Sister and BIL went though that. When they found out that he had alow sperm count they just keep trying to conceive naturally.About 8 months later she got pregnant. They had a little boy he's 16 months old. They tried for almost 2 yrs total. So there is still hope for trying naturally.

Re: Just got a call from the ob/gyn...
Do not lose hope. My DH's came back with very low count and everything I read said it was impossible to conceive. All MY preliminary tests (other than HSG) came back perfectly normal.
I think your other thread said your HSG was canceled but you need to have it because when I finally did, they found endo and a polyp (I had NO symptoms) and I needed surgery.
The first month after my surgery (and only a few months after my DH's VERY low count) we conceived naturally!

Re: Just got a call from the ob/gyn...
What is considered "low". I would get the numbers and do some research to ease your mind.
I found the most helpful part of this for me was always looking stuff up and making sure I knew where we stood.
And yes...I would suggest at this point an RE if you have any identified TTC problems. They are much more knowledagable and trained in this then obgyn's.
Dont give up hope.
Its hard to say if you can conceive naturally without knowing what the tests said.

Re: Just got a call from the ob/gyn...
My dh was diagnosed with low motility so from there we decided to go with IVF. We also did IVF with ICSI with all of the eggs that were retrieved and it was successful.
and yes I would def suggest going to an RE. If you have any questions please feel free to FM me
ETA: My dh had 3 SA's done somewhere else and they came back normal. When I went to a new RE they retested in their own lab and it came up with low motility. I'd retest.

Re: Just got a call from the ob/gyn...
Is this his first and only SA?
I would have them run it again. A lot of times one SA isn't enough to fully diagnose Male Factor.
I know my DH's counts vary widely and some IUIs they were great and some they were terrible.
Our RE recommends 3 separate SAs to truly diagnose it as Male Factor Infertility.
We decided to move on to IVF because of issues with me and him so ICSI makes the most sense.

Thanks, ladies. He's been very quiet since last night, and all I can is be the good wife and tell him that we'll get more tests done and will get thru this.
I asked for the copies and will see exactly what those numbers are.
Be prepared for more questions.

Re: Just got a call from the ob/gyn...
What everyone said previously is true. It can be natural or some just go on to IVF with ICSI.
There are also lifestyle issues that can affect sperm count/motility.
What does he do for a living? Stress, working under certain conditions can lead to low sperm count/moltility.
Does he smoke/drink? Both are contributing factors.
What type of exercise does he do? If he's doing a lot of bike riding... no good.
What types of vitamins/supplements/medications is he on?
Has he had ceratin illnesses in the past?
What is his diet like?
Most couples don't realize that the male's lifestyle is just as important as teh female's in conceiving.
There are natural ways you can help improve his count through diet, vitamins and herbs. Many RE's are quick to just push IVF but if you could take a little time and try to improve it on your own you might be able to avoid IVF.

Re: Just got a call from the ob/gyn...
Can he be tested again? DH's first results were a little lower than our RE would have liked so they had him do a second test. When we compared the results, the first test was dropped off much later than the first batch (almost close to the cut off time) to which they believe caused his lower results

Re: Just got a call from the ob/gyn..Updated 8/11
thats GOOD NEWS!
What was his total count?
I have heard of NATURAL pgs with as low as a 500,000 K count, which is very low.
Im happy you feel slighlty better.

That is so awesome. So glad to hear that. They never tell you anything specific and always make everything doom and gloom.

That is great news! He may just need some diet change or something. I am sure he is VERY happy to hear this, as opposed to her orginal assesement.
