Chipping dog

Does the microchipping hurt them? And cons to doing it?

Doesn't hurt more than a shot, really. A quick pinch. No down side to it that I know of but the benefit of it is huge.

Agreed. Almost all shelters/rescues/vets do it almost automatically.

Vets do not do it automatically, you have to pay for it. I worked in a mobile clinic and watched pets have it placed. I good vet can do it with ease, no bathing for a few days until the wound heals. Its important you keep the company up to date with you contact info, if you move you must inform them so they can make the changes on the computer. Most pet tolerate it sometime with a cry :( The down side is if you dont keep the contact info updates. Make sure you know they type of service you are paying for, how long is the contract etc. FM if you have ??

They say it doesn't hurt…I don't buy it but I am sure it isn't extremely painful. That being said, my vet always did the chipping while my dogs were under for being fixed and that made me feel better.

It's inserted with a needle so it would hurt as much as a vaccine does. There aren't any cons as far as I'm concerned and can be a life saving decision. You can usually get it done on certain days at Petco for just $15 or $19.

They say it doesn't hurt the animal.

The only con I can think of is you do not update the chip if you move, then it's not very helpful. So you need to stay on top of that.

Our vet advised it's a rather large gauge needle (bigger than those used for vaccines) so we had it done when our dog was under for her spay.

It is - but my dog barely yelped when he got chipped. And he is a BABY when it comes to the vet! Totally worth a short minute of a little pinch to have the security of someone able to locate you if the dog gets lost. I have seen quite a few lost dogs posted on FB and the person who found the dog was able to find the owner by bringing the dog to a vet to be scanned for a chip. Completely worth it!
