No prenatals until after you conceive??
I just got back from my dr's appt where I told her that DH and I would like to start TTC. She said that when we got pregnant to call her and she would put me on prenatals.
I am taking a multi vitamin with 400 mcg of folic acid. Is this ok? Does it sound strange that she told me to wait for the prenatals??

My understanding is that 400mcg is fine until your pregnant. You only need 800mcg once you conceive.

I think there is no standard and everyone is different. My doc had me on foliic acid before I went off the pill - he said every woman of childbearing years should be taking it. I have read here on these boards doctors suggesting anywhere from 400mcg to 1000mcg of folic acid which is what my doc suggested for me. When he put me on prenatals, they contained 1000mcg of folic acid so I stopped taking separate folic acid tablets. Your doctor knows you best.

Thank you. I've read on these boards that a lot of doctors put you on prenatals as soon as you go off birth control.
This is a new doctor since I recently moved and this was my frist appointment with her.

The prenatals were becoming expensive on top of all other TTC expenses so i am taking extra 400 folic acid

I dont think pre-natals are necessary while TTC. A regular multi-vitamin is fine, and I didnt even take that. My dr. said no big deal just start taking them now. IMO some people get carried away with the whole idea of prenatals and folic acid.

I never thought you would need extra vitamins before you TTC but it seems to be what the doctors (including mine) are advising.

Well, we haven't began TTC'ing yet, but will soon. I began taking multi-vitamins as a part of my daily diet a year ago and recently added a separate folic acid pill. My mom works in sonography and with ob/gyn's and they stress the importance of folic acid A LOT! So I'm doing this until i get prenatals. But listen to the Doc they know best that's why they get the big bucks! Good luck!

I think a regular vitamin and a folic acid supplement would be fine. You really do want the folic acid, though. I read that instances of Spina Bifida are down 70% due to folic acid -- and you need to be taking it very early in your pregnancy to get that benefit.

My doctor told me that you should take a prenatal vitamin through all of your birthing years, whether you're ttc or not. He says it prepares your uterus for pregnancy. I don't think it'll hurt you either way, but I would definitely follow the doctor's instructions.
