How does/will this affect pre-existing conditions? Let's say I want to move back to the US and I have a pre-existing condition, then what happens?

I do not have any pre-existing conditions and I have been living fabulously under socialized medicine for over 10 years, thank you very much. What happens then?

The pre-existing condition clause was one of the best things about the ACA.

Everything I have read is that trump wants to keep the pre existing condition clause and children to be covered under parents until they are 26. Whether that happens remains to be seen.

Yes, I have seen that, too, but I don't think it is as simple as that. I guess we will see.

This is such a disgrace.

So many people will be hurt by this.

If this is Republicanism - I hope all you Republicans can sleep well at night knowing you did this. You should be ashamed of yourselves.

This is not "Republicanism". The people in power (in both parties) don't truly represent the people. The "R" party in charge now doesn't care about anyone but the 1%. Many of their policies and beliefs are very removed from what their party used to stand for, and what I believe most of their constituents actually want.
They've gotten us into a pure black and white mentality, so if you're slightly leaning in one direction, they have you believe you have to be 100% on the extreme, and anyone who isn't in your extreme is on the opposite extreme, and is thereby your enemy.
Great distraction method. Have the people in-fighting over who is wrong and who is right, while the Elites fleece us blind....

I truly believe most people are generally Centrist, and lean one way or another on most policies. Some lean more on certain topics, but I don't think many people are at the extremes that the politicians would have us believe.

Unfortunately, there are way too many people who don't see what's going on, and are completely blind to what the Elites in power are trying to do, and I don't think that is going to change any time soon....

But people who are registered Republicans and voted for these people - they are Republicans themselves who are now accountable for the people they elected, How can anyone who voted for these people say they care about their fellow man? You don't truly care - you care about what they can do for you (which is nothing unless you're mega rich) even if it means other people will get hurt. I don't believe the people who say they're good people and would give the shirt off their back to others in need if they voted for Trump and this despicable Congress who will stop at nothing to line their own pockets. You're responsible for electing the most corrupt government into power.

I think this is a vast oversimplification.

What about the fact that the DNC put up the well connected, well funded, corrupt HRC despite them having a brilliant grassroots candidate in Bernie who CONSISTENTLY won against DJT at the polls? They did the corrupt thing, and they are as much or if not more to blame for Prez Dump than the GOP.

Seriously, enough with the Bernie stuff. He would not have won. No one in middle america was going to vote for a Jewish democratic socialist. Polls are BS, which is quite clear by the fact that none of them predicted the outcome. Let's stop the blame game. It won't get us anywhere.

I'm sorry but this isn't the "blame game." I did not say anything that wasn't true, nor did I say Bernie would definitely have won. (Though I made calls to voters across the country, and trust me, you are really wrong that no one in middle America would vote for him).

Look, this goes beyond Bernie Sanders. If you're ok with democracy being put up for sale to the highest bidder and made into a sham, good for you. I'm not. And I won't stop talking about it. Just don't read my posts if it irritates you.

Last night, Republicans made moves setting themselves up to get rid of the pre existing condition clause and children to be covered under parents until they are 26. (They'll also get rid of contraceptive coverage, coverage for vets etc.) Yes, what that lying scumbag Dump said they would keep.

As I understand it, without the clause, if you switch plans or get new coverage, the new plan can legally refuse to insure you and/or pay for treatment relating to any "pre existing condition," including diabetes, cancer, brain injury, pregnancy etc. it is just an utterly hopeless horrifying disaster.

Maybe cause he is a liar?
He also wanted to lock HRC up
The repeal has a few more steps to go: fingers croased

Re: Senate Republicans Take The First Big Step Toward Repealing Obamacare

Were people dropping dead left and right before Obamacare from not having health insurance????

I don't get why you cant either get health insurance through your job or get it the way you get home/auto/life insurance.

Pay a company an annual fee, get health insurance.

Simple and easy...

What is so hard about that???

Why should people like my husband who risks his life every day going to work pay for other people to have health insurance??? Take care of yourself and stop looking for help from everyone!

This statement shows what little understanding you have of the ACA/Obamacare and the state of Healthcare in this country.

This is from News and Guts, Dan Rather's news page:

-----

Sharing my ACA story with anyone who will listen this week: My name is Cara Williams, and I am a Social Worker in Columbus Ohio. I am writing to express my deepest concern about plans to repeal the Affordable Care Act.

For the past six years, I have worked exclusively with cancer patients in the Central Ohio area. Before the Affordable Care Act, I was routinely meeting with patients who shared the same story. And it went like this…

“I’m a middle-aged person, usually with grown children. I have worked hard all of my life…paid into the system that I believed would help me if I ever got sick. But I didn’t think I would ever get sick. Then cancer. And I’m going to chemotherapy. I’m not getting better. My medical insurance is telling me that I am getting close to the annual/lifetime limit on my coverage. What am I going to do? Now it looks like I’m going to have to leave my job because my FMLA time has run out. I have been offered COBRA coverage but I can’t afford the premium (usually around $900/month) because I won’t have any income. I have applied for Social Security Disability but I won’t be eligible for Medicare until I’ve been disabled 24 months. And my Social Security Disability income makes me ineligible for Medicaid. I have no health insurance. Even though I’ve done everything right. Even though I thought this could never happen to me and my family. Here I am. With no way to pay for my medical care. What am I going to do?”

Before the Affordable Care Act, I didn’t have an answer to this questions. I could only offer emotional support when patients had to make excruciating choices. Real choices between life and death. “Do I give everything up – my home, my car, my savings, my livelihood so that I can pay for cancer treatment that may or may not work? Should I stop treatment so that my family won’t be left with insurmountable debt? Would it be easier if I end my life on my own?” Life and death decisions.

But now the conversation has changed. Now I can say: “Let’s take a look at the Marketplace to see if we can find an affordable plan for you there.” And patients do find affordable coverage. Finally, there is hope. It seems barbaric to me that we are even having a conversation about repealing this life saving legislation. For shame.

I don’t pretend to say that the ACA is perfect. (If you use my story, please don’t delete this part.) Honestly, I would much prefer a single payer system that gives all people equal access to care. Insurance companies have too much power and influence. But it’s a start. And it’s better than the alternative which is not humane or acceptable in this great country. Please save the ACA!
That’s my story. Actually…not a story…but the reality of real people in Columbus Ohio.

Thank you, Cara Williams.

"Let them eat cake!" Chat Icon There is no hope when people don't even bother to understand.

Clearly, your husband is a public servant and your health benefits are paid for with my tax dollars. Perhaps we should start complaining about my tax dollars paying for your benefits and let you buy them on the open market.

What about people with preexisting conditions?

Young adults who are finishing up school?

Part D drug coverage for the elderly?

What about coverage for women issues?

There is a lot more to ACA than insurance coverage.

Actually people were dying without proper care because they could not afford it and a lot of people were declaring bankruptcy because of medical bills. You should be extremely thankful that your dh has a job that offers benefits. Not every employer offers insurance. Think about how your life could be different if your dh was self employed and your monthly insurance bill was the same price as your mortgage. Would you want or need more affordable coverage, or would you maybe choose to risk going without it? I find your statement so insulting to the millions of working class people here in America who work tirelessly and had no insurance. I hope you never find yourself in a place where you are without insurance because it's not a good place to be.

Health care is quite a bit more costly than home or auto insurance

How do you know that the people who get care from ACA are not working or working as hard as your husband?

People with cancer "take care of themselves" and still get cancer

Ever hear this?: But for the grace of God go I

Can anyone point me in the direction of what the "replace" step might look like? I keep hearing "repeal and replace" but the only indications I've heard about the latter are Trump's broad and empty press conference statements about how it will be "great" and carried out "almost simultaneously."

If there really is a plan that won't result in tens of thousands of innocent people dying, I might be less enraged at the "repeal" part.

This is a really sad way to think. I assume your husband is NYPD or FDNY and gets wonderful family benefits for an extremely low cost (if any).

But what if he worked his ass off as an accountant, and had to pay a ton OOP for family health insurance?? Does that make his family matter less?? Sometimes the "annual fee" is astronomical and unaffordable for people that work very hard to take care of their families.

Obamacare is still not affordable for many people. Between the premiums and the high deductibles, many young healthy people are opting to pay the penalty. People that make too much for medicaid but are not high earners can get an exemption. There are many people who are still uninsured.

Agree it is currently flawed and many people are paying a lot out of pocket. However, these are people who would otherwisw have NO insurance and if they got sick would pay a LOT more than they pay for Obamacare for their care

Also people are completely forgetting that high medical costs should be blamed on insurance companies NOT Obama

This is true, but I don't understand why the GOP doesn't work to amend the existing measure to address these glaring problems so that there is no gap in coverage for people who are benefiting from its many provisions (ppl under 26, ppl with pre-existing conditions, ppl on Medicaid, etc.) It seems like the republicans are willing to put people's lives at risk so they can erase Obama's political legacy and institute their own and do it all before there is an actual clearly delineated and functional replacement plan. It's honestly unconscionable when you consider the consequences of this indulgence of spite and political ego.

Is that true, MrsDiamondgrlie??

As a teacher who, like you, enjoys excellent employer-based health benefits that are financed on the backs of taxpayers who, yes, were dying unnecessarily before the ACA (look at the projections for deaths resulting directly from its repeal) I can't help but see an irony and arrogance in this post. You ought to consider yourself lucky that you find yourself in this situation.

My husband works his tail off as a self-employed medical technician. He has health insurance only because he's married to me and taxpayers are kind enough to pay for our benefits. Those same taxpayers deserve access to health benefits themselves.

I think a little gratitude, compassion, and humble pie are in order in your household.

It's comical, because do people really think that insurance costs will go down because Obamacare was repealed? The insurance companies are going to collect, whether it comes from the government or from the policy holders. So, now we can all pay more AND be governed by con men. Sweet.

Exactly this. My premiums have skyrocketed since this was put in place. We had to make some
Serious life changes in order to pay for healthcare. But now, we have these insane insurance costs and we are not helping anyone!!! The thought of this is truly depressing, at least before I felt like people were being taken care of.

Please step out of your bubble and talk to people who couldn't get benefits through their employers or spouse and how much it would cost them per month before the ACA was an option.

Clearly you have always been one of the lucky ones. But not all of us were and we were taking a gamble with our lives!

Don't judge before actually taking steps to learn.

Senate Republicans Take The First Big Step Toward Repealing Obamacare

It's a broken system. My opinion is that ACA put us a step backwards. Myself, and many others, did not benefit from this. My premiums skyrocketed. If someone in my family has to go to the doctor I'm paying a couple hundred dollars for that visit until I reach my insanely high deductible (on top of my premium). So now I have to ask around if a virus is going around so I don't throw money away to be told it's just a virus.

Now if it's repealed there is no way I will go back to my old insurance. This is life now thanks to Obamacare. It's a lose lose situation.

It can't just be taken away. The entire system needs an overhaul and neither candidate would or will do it. Too many hands in pockets on both sides.

Agree.

How disgusting.

My father has a preexisting condition and has for years and he could not get covered. He received quotes for 3x his monthly salary because of it. ACA saved his life and provided an affordable solution for him. Without it he would die. His medications alone can run around $2k per month without insurance.

But I guess according to your logic if my dad can't afford it, he should accept his lot in life and die.

ETA: I would appreciate a direct response from MrsDiamondGirlie but something tells me I may not get that. I would like you to tell me to my "face" what my father should do and how I should feel about that given your opinion. Let me see what you really feel.

Re: Senate Republicans Take The First Big Step Toward Repealing Obamacare

I dont think anyone who supports access to healthcare for all would argue that the current ACA is not perfect.

The current issue is that republican lawmakers want to repeal without a plan to replace it.

Human nature tells us there are some people who only think of themselves and their family and others who dont mind sharing.

And if it needs to be explained to people WHY they should give a shit about men, women and children who will not have access to healthcare and could potentially die because of said lack of access, then I really have no hope for humanity.
