Varicocelectomy?

Anyone's husband have this done?

When we started doing IUIs this past summer, we noticed that my husbands counts had dropped like a stone. He was never fabulous, but these were REALLY LOW. We did three IUIs and the numbers just kept declining. I made an appointment for him at the urologist to see what was going on. We knew years ago that he had a varicocele, but since we had conceived twice naturally, we never gave it a thought. So the urologist suggested surgery to help with the problem (I am trying to avoid IVF if possible). Well, the third IUI worked and I was pregnant...it was shocking because his counts were the lowest yet with only 800K post-wash two days in a row). Seemed like he didn't need to surgery after all!

Well unfortunately that pregnancy ended in December. So as soon as I found out, I called his doctor to get the surgery ready! Since I was going to be on the mend from the D&C, might as well get my husband fixed as well!

So the question is...did anyone's male companion have this? He is going in on Friday and I would love to hear how it went and how the recovery time was.

Hi, My husband has the varicocel cap as well but we didn;t opt for the surgery just yet because his count was high enough. We ended up having to go to IVF anyways and I'm pregnant with triplets! But I am interested to see how his surgery goes and the recovery time because we were considering doing this for a long time too. The only down side they said is that if my DH had gotten the surgery his sperm would not be good for like 2 years. We would have had to wait and we didn;t want to wait so that's why we choose IVF instead. Good luck! I'm hoping his surgery goes smoothly!

My DH was looking into getting this done, but we ended up trying medication instead. For us, this worked

He began a low dose of Clomid daily for 3 months (June, July August). We ended up getting pregnant naturally (and on accident as we just moved cross country the week before getting pregnant) in September, and I truly believe that Clomid is what did the trick. His numbers post wash were always between 1-3 million, lowest being 800k during a B2B IUI.

Thanks for the info. Just curious though, why did they say it would take 2 years for his sperm to be good? My husband's urologist said that the earliest results may be seen at 3 months. I'm hoping that it improves enough that we may be able to conceive naturally (with the exception that I need clomid)...we did with my first two pregnancies. I would like to start trying again in late Spring.

Yes good luck to your DH today..His urologist said that it takes about 2 years cause they cut the veins and they need to regenerate or whatever and it takes a long time for the sperm to heal thats what he said. Good luck to you!!

Varicocelectomy?

My Dh had it. His counts were good but motility was horrible. 3 month check up showed higher counts but motility was the same. The motility didn't improve until a year later...

Thanks! I'm actually in the waiting room now. Of course the doctor was late But here is to hoping for a quick recovery....those boys (and girls) have work to do when he is better!

Varicocelectomy?

My DH had it done and he showed no improvement in sperm count. The doctor told him 1 week recovery for normal activity, but it was at least 4-6 weeks for him to resume his normal activity/exercise. He was ablw to return to work in a few days.
