Mnuchin

Can somebody please explain to me why the democrats are boycotting?

Perhaps the issue is that for something like the treasury department I don't see an issue with having someone who is Yale educated, and successful in the world of finance lead the treasury department, but I tend to have less liberal feelings than many on here, so I'm looking for a civil discussion.

Please, keep this civil.

He lied to the committee during his hearings.

This is the most specific info I can find on what they believe he lied about:

"In the Mnuchin's case, the Columbus Dispatch cited documents showing that OneWest used automated “robo-signings” - a method for approving mortgage documents that was criticized for not fully considering them - after the former Goldman Sachs executive and OneWest chairman flatly denied those practices to senators."

The Dems want more time because they think Mnuchin was misleading. A lot of things he said during his hearing don't line up with facts. Particularly, his time at One West bank.

Thanks everyone. I found that information as well, but I was expecting something more serious-honestly with a business of that size I have doubts as to whether this is as much of a lie as it's being presented as. I guess I was also expecting a more serious reason as to why they're literally protesting his nomination.

“Mnuchin ran a bank that was notorious for aggressively foreclosing on homeowners, and now he’s lying about his bank’s dismal track record in his official responses to the Finance Committee,” Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) said Monday. “Working families simply cannot trust him to be the country’s top economic official.”

I agree that someone with his history is not necessarily going to be looking to the best interests of homeowners or potential homeowners. How do we know they don't want want a market and housing crash? They could be in cahoots with Trump who we know would love nothing more.

Thanks. I read this article also, but I tend to have a more strict view of foreclosing, but I tend to be a very strict rule follower.

If you're a strict rule follower, then shouldn't it bother you that he lied during his committee hearing?

I guess I don't see it as quite as much of a lie as people are making it out to be. I guess it's also that I also feel as if people should just pay their mortgage when they're supposed to, and it would be a non-issue, but that's a different discussion.

That's easy for many of us to do or say but many, many people were set up to fail while others bet against them and made millions off their failure.

Exactly - the whole housing bubble burst because of things like this. It wasn't just one giant coincidence that all of a sudden hundreds of thousands of people found themselves unable to pay their mortgages. Predatory lending practices weren't/aren't "no big deal."

I thought that was how the Bible and being republican worked. Cherry pick for convenience. Add a heaping tablespoon of hypocrisy for good measure.

If you haven't seen The Big Short you should check it out on Netflix. It's truly disgusting what these people got away with.

In Iceland, the bankers who participated in these schemes were sent to jail. Here, those bankers kept their jobs and, if they didn't, were paid millions of dollars as severance. Thus, if Mnuchin were in Iceland, he'd be in jail. Consider that for a moment and now consider that he is going to be the Treasury Secretary. It's an abomination.

I don't think anyone was being snide but asking for information and then being like oh ok not a big deal I'm strict on rules is like a head scratching comment.

Mnuchin

In addition, the Democrats are sick and tired of having each of their noms stonewalled by Republicans for no other reason than: they're not Republicans.
Many Dems have expressed their disdain and resentment with a "payback" attitude of "if you blocked my guy, I'm blocking yours", plain and simple.

Mnuchin is a turd, I might add.
