Raids in Bodegas
Regarding the other post, this one for sure isn't fake. My husband just walked into one at a bodega in Queens. So this is not coming from a second, third person. This is my husband who is a witness. Should he report it?

Re: Raids in Bodegas
What did he witness exactly? I think it would depend on exactly what was witnessed whether or not it should be reported.

He said there is a police squad raiding all bodegas and he just walked into one.

Raiding them and asking people for their papers so they can round up illegal immigrants? Or could it potentially be other police business?

Asking people for ID. My husband has to show his ID as well. Waiting to hear more information.

Re: Raids in Bodegas
Can you FM me the area of Queens?
Or post it here if you're okay with that.
I'm concerned about some of my neighbors and would like to get the word to them if it's anywhere near where I live.

Corona, Queens. He saw them walk out of a bodega on 101st and 37th, and then they pulled over on 101st and 35th. The one he walked into was on 104th street where they asked for his ID. This is something he heard when he walked in and I'm quoting per my husband's text "The one I walked into they wouldn't let anyone leave. I hear a lady saying I'm the owners cousin just came to visit...the cops says that nice, just do me the favor and stay seated.

Re: Raids in Bodegas
if he's still there he should take video/pics. It's not illegal he can't get in trouble. I linked above to where he can call to report it.

Thank you. I agree with Mer, if he's still around he should take pics and/or video.

Re: Raids in Bodegas
I also want to add something he just told me. He said they weren't NYPD, they were NY Sherriffs. Again I'm not sure what the difference is.

Re: Raids in Bodegas
If it is only NYC Sheriffs, it most likely is not an ICE raid. Probably other police business. NYC Sheriffs (or any LE unit) would not handle an immigration raid without the presence of federal officers.

Re: Raids in Bodegas
Sounds like it's completely unrelated to immigration. The sheriffs are probably looking for someone that did something else illegal.

Re: Raids in Bodegas
This doesn't sound like an immigration raid. They're not suppose to do that. It could something with the bodega itself, untaxed cigarettes etc.

I'm hearing there is an "immigration check point" on the street in Brooklyn. What the hell is going on?

Raids in Bodegas
Anyone read the story of the woman in El Paso? She had a court date to get a restraining order against an abusive boyfriend (the only person who knew when she'd be in court) and ICE was at the courthouse and detained her after her hearing.
Granted she has a lengthy criminal history and has been deported before but this is a very dangerous way for ICE to operate. I'm sure from this one story alone there are people who will not want to go to the police when crimes are committed against them.

If she is here illegally and has a lengthy criminal record then ICE has every right to detain her.

Re: Raids in Bodegas
The news would be all over this if it was happening. I wouldn't be so quick to video and post things if I saw something. You could be hindering an investigation. Everyone jumps to the conclusion that the police are doing something illegal.

First of all, I am seeing this in the news. Am I missing something?
Second of all, it may not technically be "illegal," since our "President" is clearly behind this and is making up EO's left and right. But it certainly seems like a drastic change in protocol to me. In any case, people are scared. This is happening in the community where my husband grew up. On Long Island. Amongst many many other places.

I'm confused. The article you reference specifically says there is no change in protocol:
Officials at Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, said the immigration roundups that people were seeing did not represent an increased tempo. The agency has about 100 fugitive teams constantly working to bring in those wanted on a variety of immigration offenses, and these teams have been just as active as they were during the Obama administration, officials said. In 2012, the most active year for deportations during Mr. Obama’s presidency, 409,849 people were deported.
If you are here illegally, living in fear is nothing new and it shouldn't be. It always amazes me how much tolerance we have for people who come here illegally.

Re: Raids in Bodegas
Where in the news are you seeing this?
ICE is conducting targeted raids. The people being deported have already had deportation hearings and a court has decided they should be returned to their country of origin. The people ICE is targeting have already overstayed deportation orders. So they came here illegally, committed another crime, were ordered to leave the country, didn't leave the country, and now are arrested and deported.
