Re: when did your dc learn to read?
She started reading....like full on beginner books in K. Now in the middle of 1st she is reading like crazy and reads EVERYTHING. The jump in her reading between K and now is insane. I haven't used anything special....she learns in school and reinforces it at home by reading all night time

when did your dc learn to read?
pretty much the same as above. My DS is in Kindergarten now. his 6th birthday was in November. He's been learning most of his reading at school, and i just reinforce it at home. i'm not doing anything special LOL the have a whole system where they pick 3 books a day from their "level". they practice them in school with the teacher or the aid... and then bring them home at night for us to practice with him. so every day he brings home 3 new books to practice that night. They all have the sight words they're working on... so the more he's seeing those words, he learns them. He's doing well with it, and is starting to get really good at sounding out harder words, too. i also bought a bunch of easy books or get them out of the library, so we usually do one or 2 of those along with the ones he brings home from school.

when did your dc learn to read?
DD started reading in pre-k. She was very interested and wanted to read so we helped her. Now she is in K and she flies through books all on her own. She reads everything.

when did your dc learn to read?
My son started reading in K as well - and now reads everything. He didn't have any interest beforehand so we didn't push him but he picked up on it quickly.

Re: when did your dc learn to read?
My first began decoding words just before his third birthday and was completely reading by 3.5 years old. My second will be 5 in May and is just starting to get letter-sound associations and he can memorize the words in simple books. So every kid is didferent. I think starting to read between 4 and 6 years old is normal.

when did your dc learn to read?
Dd will be 5 in April and is in preK. About a month ago I got some sight word flash cards and let her try them. I knew she had her letter sounds down but was still surprised at how easily she picked it up. We practice a little here and there and she's been doing great!

when did your dc learn to read?
My son was a late reader. He could do sight words in K, and still struggled in 1st. We got him a reading tutor once a week and it has helped a lot. He's still a little behind where they want him to be in 3rd grade, but his progress has been great.
My daughter is now in K and can read 3rd grade level books. The difference between her and my son is crazy.
For some people it clicks and for some they need to work a little harder.

Re: when did your dc learn to read?
DS1 started reading books a few months after he turned 4. He started K at 4.5 (December birthday) and was reading at end of K level then. He has always read above grade level. He had some sight word packets at preschool that he enjoyed reviewing. He was interested in letters and sounds from an early age. I didn't do anything special with him. It just clicked.
DS2 is 4.5. He's more interested in writing than reading. He can sound out some shorter words and likes spelling words, but I don't consider him to be that close to reading yet. I do plan to go over sight words with him at some point over the next 6 months before starting school because daycare/preschool doesn't provide those sight word packets any more. He'll read on his own time, but I at least want to expose him to it now.

when did your dc learn to read?
Sometime in first grade. I remember his teachers being concerned about his reading in K and wanting us to get outside help(he is in catholic school and they don't offer it). But in first it just clicked and all of a sudden he was reading Harry Potter.

Re: when did your dc learn to read?
Sounds at 3.5, words blending at 4, full readers by 5. Yes, phonetic books are, IMO, the way to go. Then, we did sight words.

Re: when did your dc learn to read?
I felt like every kid was reading before my older son. He is now in 2nd grade and turns 8 in a few weeks and still not a strong reader. We got him a reading tutor earlier this year after struggling to teach him. I wish we had gotten him a tutor earlier. Although DS is not a strong reader, he tests very well.
My younger kindergarten son has been reading for a while. He picks up words much easier than his older brother. It is effortless. I am also surprised at how well my 5yo spells compared to his older brother.
In our circles, it felt like most kids were reading in pre-k. I am not sure if that is the norm.

Re: when did your dc learn to read?
My son is dyslexic. He had difficulty reading, and was memorizing things in his own way. We got him tested in second grade. He cannot and will never decode words. Every word is memorized. My dd was fully reading by age four. She is in second grade and reads on a sixth grade level for reading and comprehension.

Re: when did your dc learn to read?
My son knew sight words going into K but didnt start actually reading until K. He LOVES to read which def helps. His reading skills jumped in a big way from K to 1. He is currently reading at a 3rd grade level in 1st grade.

Re: when did your dc learn to read?
My DS is 3.5 and is in the beginning stages of learning to read. He knows all letter sounds, many sight words, and can identify the vowels. He tries to sound out simple words.
Even though he's young, he has shown a strong desire to learn about letters and words and I've just went with it.
They make "easy reader" books that are great for the beginning stages.

Same. He can recognize simple words like "the" "cat" "mama" "it" etc. as well as his full name and the kids' (in his class) first names. He attempts to sound out words a lot. He's just always been interested in letters and sounds. Probably a year from now he'll be able to put it all together and read some simple books.

Re: when did your dc learn to read?
My DD has been a bookworm since she was itty bitty. She was reading a little right before Kindergarten but within the first month of Kindergarten she was reading everything you put in front of her. She's in 3rd now, still an avid reader.
The BEST thing you can do when they are little is to read with them, I think my reading to her EVERY day had a HUGE impact in her speech development, vocabulary, and ability to read early. She also got her letters and phonics down by watching Leap Frog Letter Factory and all of their other DVD's.

I was going to post something similar - I feel like everyone is going to post how quickly their DC learned to read and how they excel.
My son went into 3rd grade reading on a 'D' level (which I think was generous, I don't actually think he could read) and now in the middle of 4th is reading on a 'P' level. But that is only because we had him tested and diagnosed.

when did your dc learn to read?
My son was 5 in October and in K, he knew all letter sounds in prek but did not read or know sight words going into K (I never did it at home and they didn't at school either), now he is reading quite well.
