I understand that Trump is pushing for Health Savings Accounts, which currently are tied to High Deductible Policies. Are HSAs not available for policies issued under Obamacare?
HSA are NOT a good option for the middle class or low income families. I have an HSA/ high deductible plan now and it's insane. Not only do I pay for my monthly insurance we have lay out the first 5k just to reach our deductible. Just taking my kids to the pediatrician cost me $220 every time. Just had to see a neurologist at my consultation appointment was $550. Luckily we can afford this but people who work at my dh job at entry level positions can't afford it. So how does being ale to put higher amounts in a HSA help these people when they can't save a dollar now. What is going to happen when there people can't pay their medical bills? Or delay going to the Dr because they know they are going to get a big bill? HSA work for the rich.
A blanket statement like that simply isn't true. HSAs are generally beneficial for the very sick (chronic conditions and/or expensive monthly maintenance drugs) or the healthy. It's those in the middle health wise who may not benefit depending on the plan design/cost. In general, HSAs have cheaper premiums than traditional PPO plans. Depending on the amount of the deductible, how much is covered after the insured meets the deductible and what, if any, contribution the employer makes towards the deductible and/or premiums, a person can save money with an HSA as opposed to a PPO plan. Employers who offer both options are likely to make the HSA more attractive to employees because it's a cheaper plan for employers. Insurance companies prefer HSAs because people are more likely to manage their healthcare better. Someone may not run to the doctor or the ER at the first sign of a minor illness when it costs $175 as opposed to a $25 co-pay.
I'm not saying HSAs should be the only option or the way to go with the new bill. The deductibles still need to be affordable for those who are being offered them. They're not only for the rich though.
ETA: I'm disgusted that the intention is to make healthcare more unaffordable for low income families. I just wanted to respond about HSAs in general as I don't think they're as bad as people make them out to be.

Interesting article from AP news about the effects of the new bill on women's health care. We seriously need to get more women in our government bc this is not right and apparently men don't give a crap.
