Posted by Paramount So in fact they will work harder to make sure you stay alive in case you come out of it. Or if you don't that you are in a position to donate.
That's reassuring!

Just wanted to hear feelings about organ donor registry and how many people are registered or will not register. I know it's the right thing to do and I am currently renewing my license. For the first time I'm thinking about doing it. Maybe because I am getting older - have a child - just have a different perspective now so I am considering it. But I have that myth in my head how doctors won't try as hard to save your life when they learn you are a donor. I know it can't be true so why do I think about that?? But then I think about the lives that could be saved and I would want the same for my family members or friends if they were on a transplant list. It's all just so hard to think about, but it's also reality.
My DH tells me the same thing about EMTs or Drs not trying as hard to save me if they see I'm a donor. That being said, I am registered to donate all organs, eyes, and tissue

Organ donor registry - drivers license renewal
I am register. I believe that if I ever want to receive an organ (in time of need) for me in my family I need to be willing to give. In my opinion if you are not willing to register as an organ donor you shouldn't qualify to receive one. And before the comments I have closed family members that don't believe in donating.

Im a recipient of a cornea which without i would be legally blind, so for me it was a no brainer - myself, as well as DH are organ donors.

I can't imagine an EMT or Doctor- at the scene of an emergency- taking the time to say, wait wait before we do anything, someone find this person's license. Check if it says Organ Donor It does? Ok, no rush then. Take your time. It doesn't??- OK full speed ahead, start chest compression stat.
Even when you watch those reality shows on the Discovery Life channel- Boston EMS, all those trauma life in the ER shows, they are in such a frenzy at the scene or at the ER that they aren't checking anyone's license that is for sure. They would have no way to know you were an organ donor until after they were done working on you

Exactly. I'm amazed that people actually believe this.

Re: Organ donor registry - drivers license renewal
I am an organ donor, & I always believed the opposite of the myth (they try harder to save you, in order to preserve blood to the organs that could possibly be donated).. but either way, oh well. LOL. It's been a while but I believe I was able to put down which organs I didnt't want to donate (my eyes and skin). Felt like it was too weird... & I remember watching an episode of grey's anatomy regarding donation of those parts.

I made the decision to donate my fathers organs. He was a heavy smoker and had a massive heart attack so they were only able to salvage his corneas and his skin. I was told that someone was able to see because of this donation. His skin went to the FDNY burn unit. He was NYPD so I am fairly certain (even with the rivalry) that he would have been happy he was able to help a burn an FDNY burn victim.
I don't understand people that don't donate but I am not religious so I guess that could play a role. It's amazing to think of the gift that you can give someone after you no longer have any use for your body.

Oh ITA, that's why I am still an organ donor--all organs, eyes, tissue--they can take it all! I don't know if he truly believes it or was just being a PITA, which he is an expert at
