Moms who have children with autism

At what age was your child diagnosed? Was the diagnosis correct the first time around?

My child will be given the diagnosis but is under two years. Im not entirely sure it's autism. They said my child has lots of strengths but also some atypical behaviors. So im wondering, can a child under two really be diagnosed? Is the diagnosis correct?

Im still processing this whole thing and trying to figure out the next steps...

Moms who have children with autism

My daughter was diagnosed at 2.5, most of the time she does not present as autistic but she definitely is. She is now 10. Try not to focus on the diagnosis and just take whatever therapies they offer. The more therapies at a young age the better.

My son was diagnosed at 19 months. He had a lot of red flags though which is what prompted me to get a psych eval through EI (initially called EI for speech). Everyone on the spectrum is different though. My son just happens to be on the severe end (he is now 4.5). My husband struggled with the diagnosis at first and was in denial; I looked at it as a way to get help that he needed.

My son was diagnosed at about 26 months but I knew something was wrong way before that. He had already been receiving EI for 8 months when he was officially diagnosed. Now at 5 1/2 most people who meet him would say "he doesn't seem autistic" (hate that phrase). Most of the time it does not affect him.
But a diagnosis will help get services and services will help any child.

This is exactly what I am going through now... my husband is in denial and it makes everything so much more tougher to deal with. I'm glad to hear of children being diagnosed at a younger age so that I can explain to him that our situation is not atypical.

I appreciate everyone's responses and if anyone has advice on dealing with an in denial spouse, feel free to send me some advice !

thanks:)

Honestly for my husband it took time for him to come around when he saw himself that our son had delays.

Ditto for me too (my son will be 4 in May). DH fought me at first and was in denial and said our son was a late bloomer. It became more obvious over time really how delayed he is. DH is now his biggest advocate. He is the first one when we meet anyone to say right away that our son has autism (to prep them should he start tantrumming, running around, bouncing, etc.).

The good thing is I have found with the diagnosis I haven't really had to fight for services (so far).

When my DD was diagnosed at 18 months I was told by the therapists the diagnosis was as a precaution under the age of 2, the sooner they had a diagnosis the faster she would be able to get services.

My daughter got diagnosed at 2. I was floored when she was diagnosed. It did allow her to keep her services which was wonderful but even her ABA therapists thought she was misdiagnosed. She is in nursery now. Neither me, her teachers or school psych feel she has an accurate diagnosis. I will look to remove it before she starts kinder. However, down the road I will plan to get her evaluated for ADHD.

My DS was 15 months old. I was having him evaluated for a speech delay and they called in the psychologist who then gave the diagnosis. My husband and I weren't necessarily surprised, since this tends to run on his side of the family. When he was being re-eval'ed for CPSE, the same psychologist came in and then questioned his own diagnosis. We ended up keeping it just so services wouldn't be interrupted mid year. He is now going into CSE but does not need to be tested again till this time next year and I have a feeling at that point the diagnosis will be completely lifted. I will worry about that when the time comes. I have a feeling he's more SPD (auditory and visual).
