Range hood or microwave?

I know the hood looks nicer but I'm not keen on the microwave taking up counter space

Over the stove

We have the microwave with fan. It does take up less space

Re: Over the stove

I've had both, and I prefer the range hood, which is what I currently have.

Re: Over the stove

Hood. It's much more efficient and powerful than the vent built into the microwave, so it gets 100% of the smoke and steam out of the kitchen.

Also, with DC old enough to use the microwave, it makes it easier for them to reach it and use it. I wouldn't be comfortable taking hot food items out of a microwave that is above their heads.
I realize this isn't a major factor for many people, but when we remodeled the kitchen, DC were just about at the age when they could use the microwave, so we factored that in during the design process.

We are redoing our kitchen and doing a hood and the microwave will be in the peninsula.

Re: Over the stove

I have a range hood. Upper cabinets were hung too low to put a microwave.

I like the microwave on the counter better. I don't like to have to reach above for hot stuff.

Microwave, but we have a small kitchen. If you have room, do the range hood (I just like the look) but also mount a microwave. I don't like ones that take up precious counter space.

Prefer the look of a range hood, however only if microwave can be mounted or built in elsewhere. Would not want it on the counter top.

We have a stainless chimney style range hood (vented to the outside).
We have the micro built into a cabinet under the counter.

I like it like that... however, next time I might put it on a shelf under the counter, rather than build it in for flexability.

You might want to consider a microwave drawer if you don't want one on the counter.

Re: Over the stove

We used to have the microwave which looked fine but the "fan" doesnt really do anything. The smoke stays in your kitchen rather than venting outside. So when we remodeled we did the hood. I didnt want to take up counter space either with the micro so we did a shelf underneath top cabinets (those cabinets were half cabinets).

Re: Over the stove

Microwave.
I don't need a range hood really for venting because I don't do cooking that makes tons of steam, smoke, or odors.
Also I have a small kitchen so to maximize space this is where the microwave needed to go.

Re: Over the stove

I prefer the hood over the stove rather than the microwave.

My brother has a microwave drawer in one of his cabinets like this one

A hood is a nice focal point in the room. If you have room for a microwave drawer, that is ideal. How much so you use your microwave? If it is only to reheat coffee, then go for the hood. Good luck, and happy to help if you need some design advice. Email: [email protected]
