Re: housing market- give me your opinion

Me too. We're not ready to move this second, but if LI is going up so much faster than other parts of the tri-state area, I'll sell this place tomorrow and never look back.
I think it's the whole tri-state area. My brother just bought in Westchester after looking for well over a year in both Rockland and Westchester and encountered bidding wars on a lot of houses.

As someone who might be selling soon (and leaving NY) this makes me SO happy. After all the renos we did, overpaying for the house right before the market crashed and then being underwater for a few years I would welcome multiple good offers on my house.
My house is move in ready, everything updated, so I hope I get lucky and get a great price. Bid away LI, bid away!
Yup, we are in a similar situation. Bought in Saint James in 2008, easily put 40-50,000 into the house, and we just put it on the market this week. We are listing it slightly less than what we bought for.
It sucks that we're doing to basically lose all the money we put into it but I think this is the absolute best time to sell in the last 9 years we've been there.
Our home has a specific buyer in mind because it's a 2 bedroom 2 bath. We've had one or two showings a day, and an open house this weekend so I'm hopeful that all the work we put in coupled with the current market will net us some offers. Fingers crossed!

Our home is most likely viewed as a starter home due to it's size. It could also be a downsizing home for older people. Or someone could slap a second story on it like my next door neighbors did with their home.
We always viewed it a a stepping stone. The housing market was dismal for a while but things are turning around so we decided to take advantage of that.

Some of what we did was elective, some wasn't. Sandy forced us to do the roof, for example. The master bath reno was our decision. Our realtor was relieved to hear that we would rather price our house at current market value than think that we should take what WE paid for it, add everything we put in, and then some for profit.
I think it all depends on perspective. If we can get a good price for our home, I'm not going to obsess over what we lost.
Starting over is pretty appealing to me actually. Blank slate, lots of possibilities!

I'm moving because we'd like to leave the island. There isn't a ton of opportunity here in my DH's line of work and we just want to try something different. I'm tired of LI traffic, crowds, taxes, chaos. lol We've always wanted to live in the New England area so we're hopefully going to be heading to MA. We love it up there and there are SO many tech companies for DH so the career opportunities are plentiful for him. Nice homes, more land, and excellent schools too for the kids too!

It doesn't seem like the 1mil plus houses are going that fast.
Except in my neighborhood...this is common. It's out of control! My next door neighbor sold the house in five days 1.3 mil.
ETA...I should add that this is in Queens.
Queens is another ball of wax! Crazy what houses are going for. Then they added knocked down!!!
My house has gone up in value 300K (at least) since I bought in Summer of 2013....desirable area of Queens

Im in Queens as well. We bought in 2003. Our house is worth $350K-$400K more then what we bought it for after putting in about $125K of work. We are considering selling and moving to suffolk but not sure about the inventory out there right now.

Whoa!! That's awesome!
I'm in Suffolk, there are homes available but I wouldn't say there are a ton of them and many will need work. Like everyone said, it's a sellers market so you'll have your work cut out for you. Good luck if you decide to move.

My sister is currently looking and the realtor told her right now it's a sellers market and there's not much out there right now (Huntington, Northport, Kings Park area). Hopefully as it gets warmer you'll see more listings.
I live in Fort Salonga. One of our neighbors just put up their finished, practically brand new for 1.2.
Another neighbor with a DUMP...like the pool is caved in, the son had a drug problem so the house is practically condemned..... is going for 1.1 They have 2 acres and can sub divide. So that is for the land--ish.
